WWE Hell in a Cell 2015 Matches: Breaking Down Top Matches on the Card

Erik BeastonOct 25, 2015

"Hell in a Cell" is a phrase that conjures images of broken and bloodied men, punished and pummeled inside the confines of steel, chain-linked fencing. It evokes memories of the most vicious and intense rivalries in pro wrestling history. From The Undertaker vs. Mankind to Triple H vs. Batista, the specialty match has been the resting place for the most passionate and personal feuds to ever unfold on WWE programming.

Sunday night, two more stories will culminate inside the Devil's Playground as The Undertaker battles Brock Lesnar in a contest that draws upon an entire year of build, while Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt bring to a close the vendetta that has dominated the summer.

Neither of those matches features the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, the top prize in the industry. Instead, that title will be up for grabs in a regular singles bout as Seth Rollins and The Demon Kane bring about a sense of finality to their feud, which began this past spring and has stubbornly continued despite a lack of interest in seeing the Big Red Corporate Demon From Hell headline another pay-per-view extravaganza two decades into his career.

Sunday night's WWE Network presentation will bring about finality for some of the top programs in sports entertainment.

Just hours before the Superstars take to the squared circle, determined to dish out a pain and suffering befitting a pay-per-view with such chthonic tones, enjoy this in-depth look at the night's three marquee matches and what fans can expect from the men involved.

Hell in a Cell: The Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar

In October 2002, Undertaker and Brock Lesnar brought to an end the first chapter of their legendary rivalry inside Hell in a Cell as the main event of the No Mercy pay-per-view. It was an immensely bloody war, one that saw the Phenom spill liters of blood inside the demonic structure and Lesnar emerge with a defining victory.

More than a decade later, the two met once again, this time at WrestleMania 30. With the storied undefeated streak of the Deadman at stake, Lesnar demolished the aging legend en route to the most shocking and unsuspected victory in the history of professional wrestling.

Undertaker avenged the defeat this past August when he defeated Lesnar in controversial fashion at SummerSlam. Now, their storied rivalry will conclude inside the structure that solidified Lesnar's status as the new face of destruction.

The aforementioned SummerSlam bout was one focused heavily on reversals and kick-outs after finishers. The drama created in those spots camouflaged the weaknesses of both performers at this point in their careers. That should be the blueprint for Sunday's bout, as the violent and barbaric nature of the match will cover up their deficiencies as more traditional workers.

Lesnar should win here but never underestimate Vince McMahon's adoration for his greatest creation. The Undertaker will always have the support of the boss, even if it means putting him over someone he really has no business beating at this point in his Hall of Fame career.

Keep an eye on Paul Heyman outside of the cell. In their first meeting inside the steel, Heyman played a significant role early, his tie pulled between the mesh and his face bloodied courtesy of the Deadman. Could history repeat itself? It certainly bears watching.

Hell in a Cell: Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt

At Money in the Bank this past June, Bray Wyatt prevented Roman Reigns from winning the ladder match of the same name and capturing the briefcase that would have guaranteed him a championship opportunity for the next year. Since then, the New Face of Fear has repeatedly justified his actions by exclaiming, "anyone but you, Roman."

Why anyone but Reigns? That part has not been made clear by WWE Creative. What has, though, is the hatred that exists between the two Superstars.

Sunday night, when Reigns and Wyatt step foot inside Hell in a Cell, they will do so for the first times in their young careers. With Luke Harper, Braun Strowman and Erick Rowan unable to interfere on the behalf of the Reaper of Souls and Dean Ambrose incapable of breaking through the steel mesh to assist his "brother," Reigns and Wyatt will be left to settle their differences like men.

In what will likely be the best of the cell matches on Sunday's broadcast, the two stars of the future will have the opportunity to prove to the world just why they should be stars of the present, too.

WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match: Kane vs. Seth Rollins

Did you know that the match between Kane and Rollins is for the WWE title? Did you know that Kane's job as Director of Operations is at stake in Sunday's bout? Odds are, the answer to one of those questions is "yes" but not the one you would have hoped.

That is how poorly booked the entire feud between Kane and Seth Rollins has been to this point.

The Demon emerged from hiding, stalking after Rollins and leaving him lying in a heap, the recipient of a Tombstone piledriver. For weeks, he picked up the WWE title and stared at it, insinuating that he was concerned with taking it from The Architect.

Yet, over the weeks that proceeded, more was made of the fact that a loss for Kane meant his unemployment, his spot in The Authority erased. The top prize in the sport took a backseat, and soon, the entire rivalry did, the most minimal of interactions between the two in the final week before Hell in a Cell.

Rollins has been one of the most valuable players in WWE here in 2015, but the likelihood of anything resembling the great matches he wrestled against Cena is low. Kane is not the performer he once was, but he will probably be motivated to deliver in this, his latest major opportunity.

The Architect will win this, if only because putting the gold on Kane will be an admission of failure regarding Rollins' time as champion, but that will hardly be enough to justify what has been a wholly disappointing and disjointed program dating back to this past spring.
