Hong Kong Open 2015: Saturday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights

Tom SunderlandOct 24, 2015

Justin Rose maintained his lead at the Hong Kong Open 2015 on Saturday after shooting a third-round 64 to finish on 15 under par. He is joined at the top of the leaderboard by Lucas Bjerregaard, and they are set for a climactic finish on Sunday.

Rose soared on Day 3 thanks to a couple of eagles on the third and 13th and has still recorded just a single bogey all week, but Denmark's Bjerregaard remains level with Rose.

On the other hand, Rose's compatriot Ian Poulter fell out of contention for the Hong Kong crown after shooting a three over par 73 on Saturday that leaves him what seems an insurmountable 11 shots off the lead.

Saturday Recap

Rose's consistency from the tee kept him in contention, while Bjerregaard's work on the greens helped to keep the bogeys at bay.

The 24-year-old managed three birdies on the front nine, his best record of the competition so far, but it was on the second half of the New Territories course that he again unleashed his finest golf.

Having recorded five birdies on the back nine in both Day 1 and Day 2, Bjerregaard showed some superb touch on the greens to put the gloss on his approach play.

He and Rose were tied on 15 under heading into the last three holes before Phil Casey of the Associated Press confirmed Bjerregaard's pull-away birdie on the 16th. However, his finest achievement remained the four consecutive birdies from the 10th to the 13th:

Having enjoyed a mistake-free round on Saturday, a level head was all that was needed to ensure the Dane went into the clubhouse on Saturday with the tournament lead, but he faltered at the last hurdle, much to Rose's delight.

The 18th saw Bjerregaard commit his biggest error of the day and miss a putt from 10 feet, leaving Rose free to claim his 14th par of the day and draw back level before Sunday's curtain call.

While Rose was solid in not allowing many mistakes pass him by, he also wasn't making the kind of plays that would allow him to etch out a cushioned lead—or at least not on a frequent enough basis.

The official European Tour Twitter account showed evidence Rose was certainly capable of the sublime, including this putt from 50 feet on the 13th:

Indian pair Anirban Lahiri and Jeev Milkha Singh makes up the top four after each impressing with Saturday scores of five under par, while England's Matthew Fitzpatrick and Matt Ford are also in the top 10.

Thai contender Thongchai Jaidee was one of Saturday's most impressive players and made his climb into the leaderboard's top 10 with a round of 64, beating his previous best at this year's contest by three shots.

The same couldn't be said for Poulter, though. His tournament fell to pieces on Saturday after carding a 73 that puts him too far off the lead to imagine any Sunday comeback will be possible.

Sky Sports reported earlier this week on the Englishman's mad dash to make the Hong Kong tournament, but the tricky travelling schedule didn't appear to have any lingering effects—until Saturday, that is.

Poulter holed six bogeys in total after recording just four across the previous two days of the competition, a result that looks likely to see his slump down the European Tour rankings linger on.

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell sits level with Poulter on four under overall and will struggle to launch a revival on Day 4, where Rose and Bjerregaard will resume battle in what's shaping up to be a terrific Hong Kong climax.
