Nia Jax, Asuka Bring Element of Danger to NXT Women's Division

Erik BeastonOct 22, 2015

Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch, Charlotte and Bayley may have revolutionized women's wrestling in NXT, delivering legitimate Match of the Year candidates during countless live specials, but the Divas division is about to get a makeover courtesy of two incredibly dangerous newcomers.

Nia Jax and Asuka have arrived in NXT and have completely changed the landscape.

Prior to their arrivals, women's wrestling in NXT was about wrestlers wrestling for the top prize in the division. Sure, Banks had her "The Boss" character, but by and large, the stories that revolved around the NXT Women's Championship were born of desires to prove one's self and wear championship gold.

Both Jax and Asuka are different. There is a very real air of danger that accompanies them to the squared circle that simply did not exist prior to their debuts. They are slightly unhinged, as Asuka has demonstrated countless times already, and can deliver great punishment to their opponents.

Poor Dana Brooke and Billie Kay have already felt the wrath of the Japanese star, who has showcased both a flair for the dramatic and what appears to be amusement anytime she is physically provoked by her opponent. As capable of absorbing punishment as she is in dealing it out, Asuka is slightly deranged, and the fans in NXT approve.

Jax, on the other hand, is physically imposing. She is big but athletic and strong. She had both a size and strength advantage over anyone she opposes and international competitor Evie found out the hard way just how dangerous the newcomer can be.

Over the course of his career, The Rock repeatedly demonstrated how nasty, mean and inconsiderate of his opponent's health he could be. As the cousin of The Great One, Jax appears posed to prove those traits run in the family.

Their presence allows for the telling of different stories. Instead of one woman being on equal footing as another, as was the case when the Four Horsewomen dominated the brand, there will be more opportunity for expansion of feuds and rivalries to involve other elements.

There is the "David vs. Goliath" program between Bayley and Jax that would almost certainly help get the newcomer over as a destructive force and Bayley as the resilient underdog she has always been. Watching her run over the most popular female star in NXT, perhaps with closeups of crying fans worried about the well-being of their favorite wrestler, would make for fantastic television.

As for Asuka, there is plenty of potential for her as both a heel and babyface. The characteristics she has exhibited to this point ensure it. Whether as the delightfully crazed heroine or dangerously unstable villain, she would create unique matches and situations not unlike Dean Ambrose or even Kane.

To this point, NXT has never had a female performer the likes of Asuka or Nia Jax. They are characters as well as wrestlers. Moreover, there is an air of danger around them that is not necessarily seen elsewhere in the Divas division.

Anyone who followed Kevin Owens' rise and subsequent success in NXT knows just how appealing the element of danger can be. The assaults he dished out to Sami Zayn, Neville and anyone else in his path added to his reputation and ignited a sense of anticipation and unpredictability that made him a fresh and exciting character.

That is the fate that awaits Asuka and Jax, if their characters stay on the current path.

We have seen sudden shifts and changes to work with any weaknesses talents may have. Barring any such alterations, the Divas division will be injected with a danger that will keep it fresh and interesting and develop some of the most compelling and intriguing stories the brand has seen to this point.
