Strong Start by Golovkin
Golovkin dominated the fight from start to finish; the only surprise of the night was perhaps that it didn't end sooner.
GGG set the tone from the walk-on as the partisan crowd vocally supported him. ESPN's Dan Rafael shared the contrasting reception for the two fighters:
Once the fight got underway, the Kazakh began with dangerous intent, as he utilised his powerful left jab to devastating effect before clocking the Canadian with a big right hook to huge applause from the spectators.
Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix highlighted Lemieux's inability to defend against him, with HBO Boxing backing him up with a telling stat:
From there, it was already clear there would only be one winner.
Lemieux Floored in the Fifth
Golovkin continued to dominate the 26-year-old throughout the early rounds, culminating in a crucial knockdown in the fifth.
To his credit, Lemieux had shown admirable resilience given the level of punishment he was taking, but the fighter was drawn out into facing Golovkin openly, and that proved to be a fatal mistake.

The pair thrillingly exchanged left-right combos, but Lemieux left himself vulnerable, and a quick flurry of punches to the body from Golovkin sent him to the mat.
As Mannix noted, Lemieux was fortunate it occurred late in the round:
Lemieux was visibly in pain, though, as his chances of going the distance slipped further and further away.
Doctor Called in the Seventh
Lemieux took more and more heavy hits as the fight wore on, and by the seventh round GGG had him bleeding from the nose, which prompted the referee to call in the doctor.
The doctor gave the bloodied and battered Lemieux the all-clear to continue on, but as Mannix reports, it proved to be the beginning of the end for him:
The fight quickly resumed the familiar pattern of Golovkin dominating his weary opponent at every turn, as jab after jab took its toll on the Canadian. Less than two minutes into the eighth, the fight was stopped.
Here is the final scorecard for the match, courtesy of the Guardian's Bryan Armen Graham:
Golovkin moves onto 34 fights unbeaten, with an incredible 31 of them ending in knockouts. According to the Associated Press's Tim Dahlberg via Yahoo Sports, the Kazakh will most likely face Miguel Cotto or Canelo Alvarez after the pair face off in November.
Per the report, promoter Tom Loeffler said: "He'll be at the fight and he'll be looking to fight the winner. Whoever wins that fight will clearly be at the top of the sport as Gennady is himself."
As for Lemieux, he said, "I'll keep my mouth shut tonight. But I'll see him in the future."
The defeat was only the third of the Canadian's otherwise impressive career, but the gulf in quality was plain for all to see on Saturday. If Lemieux wants a shot at a rematch in the future, he'll need to dust himself off and prove he can match the division's other top contenders.
