WWE Hell in a Cell 2015: Biggest Missed Opportunities in Event's History

Aaron BowerOct 12, 2015

It certainly isn't one of the longest-running pay-per-view shows in history, but there have been a few occasions where WWE has missed a trick at Hell in a Cell.

A show that usually provides main event matches inside the cell has had drama and excitement in the past, but looking back, there have been some bouts where something could have been done a little bit better.

Here's a look at a selection of the biggest missed opportunities in Hell in a Cell's history.

CM Punk Not Going Over as Champion (2011)

2011 was definitely CM Punk's year, but after stealing the show in the middle part of the year, the latter part was much more subdued.

A peculiar rivalry with Triple H and Kevin Nash followed on from him losing the WWE Championship to Alberto Del Rio at SummerSlam, a rivalry that he came out of on the wrong side.

But Hell in a Cell provided a great opportunity for him to get back on the horse and get his hands back on the WWE Championship.

He was booked to compete in the cell against defending champion John Cena and Del Rio, but yet again, Punk came up short.

He lost out to Del Rio once more, and although he would take the title from the Mexican soon after and embark on a lengthy run as WWE champion, there was no reason why he couldn't have done it here.

Big Show vs. Sheamus Not Being Inside The Cell (2012)

The main event of the 2012 pay-per-view featured Ryback getting screwed inside the cell by Brad Maddox and CM Punk to ensure the latter remained WWE champion.

But whilst that match didn't really need the cell to give it anything extra, Big Show vs. Sheamus for the World Heavyweight Championship inside the demonic structure would have been much, much better.

They're obviously both really physical guys, and despite the buildup to the match being focused on which man had the stronger move, the cell could have given it something really good.

We could have seen one of the most physical, brutal cell matches in years. Instead, WWE opted for the WWE Championship match inside the cell. This felt like a real missed opportunity.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Cesaro Not Going The Distance (2014)

One of the highlights of 2014's Hell in a Cell show was definitely the Intercontinental Championship match between Dolph Ziggler and Cesaro.

As soon as WWE announced it would be a 2-out-of-3 Falls match, you knew it was going to be a real classic. They're two of the company's best technicians on the mat, and they often produce great matches whenever they wrestle. As soon as they were thrown into a rivalry together, it seemed certain to be special.

Which is why it's a shame that at last year's pay-per-view, the match didn't roll into the third fall many expected it would.

It was as good a bout as any on the night, and whilst ending it at two falls obviously acts as a bit of a surprise, in this instance, it would have been good to see all three contested.
