Jurgen Klopp Not Interested in Liverpool Transfer Budget, Adam Lallana 'Excited'

Matt JonesOct 11, 2015

New Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed he isn’t itching to spend big in the January window, insisting he will give the current crop of players a chance.

The German was unveiled as the new Reds manager on Friday and will oversee his first game on Saturday at Tottenham. But Klopp isn’t planning to give the squad a major facelift at the first opportunity, it would seem.

“I am not interested in the money I have to spend in January,” Klopp told Bild (h/t James Whaling of the Daily Mirror). “It's only October now. Let's look at the players who are already here first.”

It’s never been Klopp’s style to splash the cash as manager. During his time with Borussia Dortmund, their renaissance was founded on smart scouting, enriching coaching and a focus on tactical minutiae. At Liverpool, you suspect the latter two of those three attributes will be implemented first as the German looks to propel the Reds up the Premier League table.

Indeed, as noted by Bleacher Report’s Clark Whitney, for all his qualities, Klopp has never had too much success when spending big money anyway:

Klopp also told Bild he was under no illusions about the size of the task he was facing in taking on the job at Anfield, per Whaling:

"

I have no idea why the hype is so big, I am humbled to have this chance. Lots of German coaches have been successful but not many come here. This is a big challenge for me and my coaching team.

Liverpool have had a period without success and changed managers a lot. Now the hope is for miracles, but progress takes time. I had a long conversation [with John Henry]. The aim is to develop a recognisable brand of football.

There’s definitely no quick fix for the Reds. Klopp is already a popular figure among the club’s supporters for his amicable nature and previous pedigree, but it will take a while for these players to take on the strict tactical instructions he professes, and for the manager himself to adapt to a new style of football and culture.

According to Anthony Hay of the MailOnline, the German is starting to get settled in Merseyside, renting the flat previously home to Brendan Rodgers in Sefton Park.

As we can see here courtesy of local restaurant, The Quarter, Klopp has been out and about meeting locals since his Friday press conference, too:

There’s definitely an excitement which has gripped the city since the manager’s unveiling, with Liverpool supporters keen to see this team in action under the former Dortmund chief.

It’s an anticipation which will surely be festering within the players, too; current Reds midfielder Adam Lallana revealed he can’t wait to get going, per Matt Barlow of the Daily Mail:

"

I’m very excited to work with him. I saw the press conference and the reaction he was getting and like everybody who was there I think it’s going to be an exciting time.

He came across very well. It was a good press conference. I’ve got one more game with England to worry about first, but I’ll be excited to get back to the club afterwards.

There are a lot of teams in the Premier League who spend big in an attempt to amend their problems, so Klopp’s approach is refreshing to hear. After all, Liverpool have thrown money at players during the last two summer windows looking to replace departed key men, and it’s a ploy which hasn’t worked.

Klopp will find he has a talented squad to work with and one of his major positives as a manager is getting the best out of individuals.

If he can do so with these Liverpool stars and create a positive atmosphere around the football club, then the Reds may not need to spend big mid-season if they’re to challenge for a top-four spot.
