Presidents Cup 2015: Top Scores, Standings Review and Predictions for Saturday

Tim DanielsOct 9, 2015

The International team stormed back Friday to win three matches and halve another to get back within one point heading into the weekend at the 2015 Presidents Cup. It was a much-needed performance from the host side after the United States won four matches on Day 1.

It actually looked like the Americans were getting ready to pull away during the early portion of Day 2. They grabbed quick leads in several matches before the Internationals finally came alive. The comeback adds some extra drama to the equation with two days to play.

Let's check out how Friday's action played out at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea. That's followed by the updated team scores and a look at Saturday's morning session.

The United States first sent out the dynamic tandem of Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth Friday in an attempt to seize complete control after a terrific Day 1. Neither one played well, which opened the door for Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace to score a comfortable victory and change the outlook.

It also didn't help the Americans that a ball penalty on Phil Mickelson allowed the International team of Adam Scott and Jason Day to pick up two strokes on one hole in an eventual draw. So instead of building a commanding lead, the five-time defending champions are now in a tight battle.

Afterward, captain Jay Haas admitted things didn't go according to plan on Day 2, as noted by Steve DiMeglio of USA Today.

"Obviously we're not as pleased with our day today as we were yesterday," Haas said. "We had some great match-ups out there, and the guys felt comfortable with who they were out with. Just the nature of the game. Some days are better than others."

Now it's the Internationals trying to keep things trending in their favor. They are leading off Saturday's play, which will also include an afternoon fourball session, with the unbeaten pair of Oosthuizen and Grace. They also split Scott and Day back up to give the lineup a little more depth.

Bubba Watson and J.B. Holmes, the only pairing to win a match on each of the first two days, will stay together for the Americans. They are both players willing to take chances, and it's a game plan that's been effective for them so far.

That said, the marquee match of the morning features the two players who dominated the golf world at different parts of 2015, as highlighted by Mike McAllister of PGATour.com:

Given the close nature of the other matchups, that one could very well decide which team ends up getting more points out of the session.

All told, the United States still has the more talented team from top to bottom. The Americans must rebound from a lackluster Friday to at least play level throughout Saturday to give themselves a little margin for error before the typically wild singles session on the final day.

While the American group would have preferred to take full control Friday, the charge from the Internationals does bring some more entertainment value to the event for the weekend.
