Arsene Wenger Questions Brendan Rodgers' Sacking, Talks Bayern Munich and More

Rory MarsdenOct 9, 2015

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has questioned Liverpool's rationale for sacking manger Brendan Rodgers after just eight games of the new Premier League season.

The Frenchman believes Rodgers deserved more of a chance at Anfield, especially as he nearly led them to their first league title since 1990 in 2013-14—they finished two points back from champions Manchester City.

Liverpool have been quick in appointing former Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp in Rodgers' place, but Wenger insists his dismissal was undeserved, per beIN Sports:

"

I’m surprised because first of all for me it’s very sad. I think when you lose your job in life, we all have jobs, it’s difficult. And on top of that after eight games it’s very, very difficult because if you start well and you have a bad moment during the season, people forgive you, but if you start wrong straight away you are questioned and that’s what happened to Brendan Rodgers.

Let’s not forget Liverpool has not won the championship since 1990. They won 18 championships and since '90 they have not won the championship. [They] came the closest to winning it two years ago and now I don’t know why really, the rational reasons why they have made that decision so quickly. It’s difficult for me to understand.

"

Arsenal entered the current international break on the back of an impressive and morale-boosting 3-0 win over Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium.

They now lie in second place in the Premier League, two points back from the Sky Blues, with Watford to play next in the English top flight on October 17.

Should the Gunners be able to consistently reproduce the level of performance they showed against United they should be able to mount a genuine title challenge this season—although Bleacher Report's Jonathan Johnson predicts a third-place finish for the north London club:

However, despite their decent form in the league, two defeats in their opening two group games of the Champions League—against Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiakos—have left Arsenal in genuine danger of failing to make the knockout stages.

Following their clash with Watford, Arsenal face the first of back-to-back matches against in-form Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

They will likely need to win at least one of their games against Pep Guardiola's indomitable side, described by Wenger us "unbeatable," per beIN Sports.

However, the 65-year-old—who is closing in on two decades as Arsenal manager—believes his side will have a chance against Bayern if they reproduce the quality they showed against United, per beIN Sports:

"[We can win by] playing at a huge pace and by playing with the same belief and by not letting them dictate the game because Bayern likes to have the ball, they like to get you back and so we have to win the ball well and be very well-organised and to use our opportunities to go forward with the maximum pace."

Bayern, though, are in breathtaking form at the moment having won all eight of their Bundesliga games so far this season and picked up maximum points from their first two Champions League games.

It will take quite an effort from Arsenal to even claim a point against them, but Wenger's confidence is arguably justified after their fine display against the Red Devils.
