How Jurgen Klopp Can Save Liverpool's Season

Zac WassinkOct 8, 2015

The worst-kept secret in the Premier League is about to be unveiled. Jurgen Klopp has agreed to become Liverpool's next manager.

This is according to multiple reports, including Ben Smith of BBC Sport:

"

The 48-year-old German replaces Brendan Rodgers, who was sacked on Sunday after three and a half years in charge with the club 10th in the Premier League.

Klopp has been out of work since May, when he ended a seven-year spell at Borussia Dortmund to take a sabbatical.

Liverpool fans may want to wait before beginning their official Klopp parties. No official agreement between Klopp and Liverpool has yet been reached. Liverpool have confirmed that a club press conference will take place Friday morning local time:

"

Liverpool Football Club can confirm a press conference will be held at 10am BST on Friday morning at Anfield for a major club announcement.

The media have been invited to the Reds’ stadium for the briefing, which will be broadcast live on LFCTV and LFCTV GO.

"

Liverpool fans, understandably excited about the news, took to Twitter to celebrate. Some even tracked Klopp's fight as he made the journey to what seems to be his new place of employment.

Klopp's resume, as detailed by Smith, is impressive. He won the Bundesliga with Dortmund for 2010-11. Klopp is a two-time German Manager of the Year (2011, 2012). As noteworthy as are his prior accomplishments, Klopp will bring an energy that has been missing from Liverpool for too long.

Brendan Rodgers, sacked by Liverpool last Sunday after a poor start to the current campaign, was a fine manager. Don't forget that he guided the Reds to second place two seasons ago. Even in that finish, however, existed disappointment.

Liverpool could have won the Premier League that spring. Liverpool could have done better in the Champions League the following season. Rodgers then failed to lead Liverpool back to the top European competition, an unforgivable offense in the eyes of some supporters.

An easy criticism, fair or not, could be that Rodgers could not handle the pressures of being the Liverpool boss. Rodgers bringing a smaller club up through the ranks and to the Premier League is one thing. Taking Liverpool ahead of the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal is another. As steady as Rodgers was, Liverpool simply needed more.

Enter Klopp.

Klopp seemed to thrive on knowing that Dortmund could not financially hang with Bayern Munich. He embraced that challenge and, by doing so, electrified supporters. Germany coach Joachim Low mentioned this while speaking with reporters on Thursday (h/t Carl Markham of Irish Examiner):

"

Low thinks the similarities between the two clubs will help Klopp.

“He had an extraordinarily successful time in Dortmund. He released loads of emotions in the Dortmund crowd,” said World Cup winner Low.

"If you look at it from afar there are some parallels between Dortmund and Liverpool with the fantastic supporters’ culture. Klopp would be a great addition to any team.”

"

Rodgers' biggest problem this season was Liverpool not finding the back of the net. Liverpool have averaged a single goal per match in eight League contests, per ESPN. Klopp has a history of managing high-energy clubs that live and die on attacking football. His rock-star energy alone should make a difference for the Reds in the attacking third.

As Phil Blundell of the Anfield Wrap explained, Klopp will have a solid foundation for his managerial style at Liverpool:

"

Goals, aggression, pace, quality, creativity. Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Christian Benteke, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Ings, Jordon Ibe, Divock Origi, Adam Lallana — it’s pretty deep. Bring Lazar Markovic back from loan (makes the decision to loan him even madder than it already was) and we’ve got real options up front.

"

That does not mean that Klopp is not already thinking ahead to the January transfer window. Dortmund attacker Marco Reus has been linked with Liverpool in transfer rumors for months, long before Rodgers was given his marching orders (h/t Adam Skinner of the Express).

Taylor Williams of the Transfer Tavern website put together a best Liverpool XI that includes Reus. Williams produced that lineup a day before the Klopp news broke.

Reus would be a great get for most Premier League clubs, Liverpool included. The 2012 German Footballer of the Year (h/t UEFA.com) is a perfect fit for Klopp's style. Reus is attack-minded, and he has the skill and pace to get by defenders. He can finish opportunities, and he can also create scoring chances for team-mates. Klopp could place Reus in one of several positions because of the player's versatility.

Klopp and Reus: A marriage that is meant to be.

Perhaps the biggest reason Liverpool supporters should view Klopp as their savior is because of the jealousy felt by fans of other Premier League sides. Would some Tottenham Hotspur supporters trade Mauricio Pochettino for Klopp? Absolutely. Are there Arsenal fans who would rate Klopp ahead of Arsene Wenger? No question. The way things are going at Stamford Bridge these days, there are probably some Chelsea backers wishing it was Klopp and not Jose Mourinho leading the club.

Klopp would have had his pick of jobs had he waited until the summer. Liverpool sweeping Klopp off of his feet now could be the season's best signing. Arguably the most-wanted manager in the world picked Liverpool as soon as the opportunity arose.

There is no better boss than Klopp to guide Liverpool back to Champions League contention this spring.
