Ranking PSG's Top 5 Players for September
September has been a good month for the Ligue 1 champions. Paris Saint-Germain have managed to start the season strong, remain unbeaten in the league and kick off their UEFA Champions League campaign with two wins from two.
Usually slow starters in the league, they may not have won all four games in September, but to pick up eight points is more than enough to see them sit top of the league.
The scary prospect for the rest of the Ligue 1 sides is that they have not been as good as they could have been.
Here are PSG’s top five players from September.
5. Javier Pastore
1 of 5
Going into the new season, it wasn't quite clear where Javier Pastore would fit into the system with Angel Di Maria added to the mix. However, the Argentine playmaker has shown his versatility, able to play deeper while still adding his trademark creativity.
Three assists in September plus a goal and a Man of the Match performance against Guingamp make Pastore one of the standout players this month.
There is definitely more to come from the former Palermo man, once the attacking unit fully clicks together.
4. Serge Aurier
2 of 5
After spending last season on loan at the Parc des Princes, Serge Aurier's move was made permanent this summer, and he has repaid the faith coach Laurent Blanc has showed in him.
He never fully convinced last year, but he's blown the doubts away with his early season form, and Blanc agrees, telling UEFA.com: "Serge Aurier needed some time to adapt to our game, but now he's showing his best qualities."
Against Shakhtar he continued his goal-scoring form, adding his second of the season with a superb back-post header.
There is much more to come from the Ivorian defender. He has a great blend of attacking energy and defensive stability, and that will benefit the club going forward.
3. Marco Verratti
3 of 5
It's no secret to the PSG faithful that Marco Verratti is one of the most important players in this current team. Beside Blaise Matuidi, they are the duo that drives the side forward and gives the attack the freedom to create and thrive.
It was the Italian who picked out Angel Di Maria for his first goal for the club, but it's more the work rate he offers the team that deserves the recognition.
He has quickly become irreplaceable in the Parisian midfield, and at 22 years old, he is only going to get better.
2. Edinson Cavani
4 of 5
It's fairly easy to criticise Edinson Cavani's performances—see previous columns—but all you can ask of a striker is to score the goals that matter.
The biggest failure of his PSG career so far is not scoring in the bigger games, but until they come—starting with Le Classique on Sunday—you can only judge him on the games so far this season.
Twice against Bordeaux he gave his side the lead, then in Reims he had to come off the bench to secure an away point and avoid defeat.
With five goals in September, Blanc will hope the Uruguayan can carry the scoring touch throughout the campaign.
1. Angel Di Maria
5 of 5
After a tough time at Manchester United, the Argentine forward has enjoyed a bright start to his PSG career.
His first goal came in the 2-0 UEFA Champions League win over Malmo, scoring after just four minutes, but it was his overall involvement that pleased the Parc des Princes crowd.
Rightly given a standing ovation for his performance, he was involved in everything that PSG created that night.
Goals and assists against Guingamp and Nantes took his tally to three and two for the month—building on his debut against Monaco.
