Louis van Gaal Reiterates Wish to Retire After Leaving Manchester United

Rory MarsdenOct 2, 2015

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has reiterated his desire to leave management following his spell in charge at Old Trafford.

The 64-year-old Dutchman has had a varied and successful career that has included spells with Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and the Netherlands.

Van Gaal—whose current contract with United expires in 2017—is insistent that he is not in for the long haul with the Red Devils, but he does want success at Old Trafford, per the Manchester Evening News' James Robson:

"

I always want more. I have set my aims always in advance. It’s the same thing as what I’m doing now. I shall retire. I always do what I have said. I have always set my own aims and I think that I have set my last aim also. I set aims and I was very lucky that clubs or national teams want me. Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson are other types I think.

"

Van Gaal faces up to Wenger on Sunday with the Frenchman having celebrated 19 years at Arsenal this week.

United currently sit top of the Premier League for the first time in Van Gaal's reign—he took over in 2014—and a victory at the Emirates would preserve the Red Devils' place at the head of the table.

Bleacher Report's Jonathan Johnson is backing United to pick up three points in north London:

Van Gaal is reportedly eager to extend his stay at United past 2017, but he will not be emulating Sir Alex Ferguson in staying at the club for over 26 years, per Jeremy Cross of the Daily Star

His longest spell in charge at a club has been with Ajax, where he spent six years as manager, ahead of shorter spells with Barca, Bayern, the Dutch national team and AZ Alkmaar.

Van Gaal was brought in to Old Trafford following David Moyes' miserable season in charge as Ferguson's successor.

He has returned United to the Champions League and the Red Devils are currently flying high in the English top flight.

It is questionable whether United actually have the squad to triumph in the Premier League, but should Van Gaal add England's domestic title to his already impressive haul before retiring it would be one of his crowning achievements.
