Ranking Barcelona's Top 5 Players for September
September has been a mixed month for Barcelona.
It started with a bang, as they beat title rivals Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon, but then they dropped points against Roma in the Champions League, were crushed by Celta Vigo and failed to keep a single clean sheet in the month.
Here are their results during September, and this slideshow runs down the top five players for the team in this month.
Atletico Madrid 1-2 Barcelona
Roma 1-1 Barcelona
Barcelona 4-1 Levante
Celta Vigo 4-1 Barcelona
Barcelona 2-1 Las Palmas
Barcelona 2-1 Bayer Leverkusen
5. Andres Iniesta
1 of 5
This has not been the finest month for Andres Iniesta, but neither has it been for his club. Despite some good results, the general performances have been poor.
The likes of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Javier Mascherano and Neymar have been well below par, while other players like Adriano and Jeremy Mathieu have been weak when called upon in odd matches here and there.
Iniesta has been the club's fifth-best player during this period by virtue of not being bad, rather than being particularly good.
He showed some good touches against Atletico, linking the play between the midfield and attack.
Against Roma he was creative, with some good through-balls, even if the forwards didn't capitalise on them.
The Celta Vigo defeat was a poor performance by the whole side in general, and he was, arguably, Barcelona's best player against Bayer Leverkusen until he got injured.
The team will miss him in the weeks ahead.
4. Sergio Busquets
2 of 5
Much like Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets hasn't been at his best this month. However, he has been closer to their usual standard than many of their team-mates have been.
He was important in the win over Atletico at the Vicente Calderon, and filled a more-attacking role against Las Palmas when asked to as well.
Busquets helped create Luis Suarez's goal in that game, stepping over the ball, which gave the Uruguayan the chance to strike.
The one really bad performance he had came in the 4-1 mauling by Celta Vigo.
3. Lionel Messi
3 of 5
Lionel Messi came back from the international break just before Barcelona took on Atletico Madrid after attending the birth of his second son, so he was left on the bench.
Luis Enrique threw him on in the second half and Messi scored the winner, with a delightful finish past Jan Oblak.
On top of that, the Argentina international set up Barcelona's goal against Celta Vigo, plus scoring two and getting an assist against Levante.
Unfortunately, a knee injury ended his participation against Las Palmas after just 10 minutes, and he will be out for several weeks.
The only blot on his copybook during September was missing a penalty against Levante. Scoring them seems to be a problem for him at the moment.
2. Luis Suarez
4 of 5
There have been two stand-out players for Barcelona in September, and it was tough to choose between them. Second, but only fractionally, was Luis Suarez.
The Uruguayan is now the only part of the forward trident which is both fit and firing.
He scored the winner in the Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen, blasting home after good work by Munir El Haddadi.
After Lionel Messi's injury against Las Palmas, Suarez stepped up and scored the two goals that won it for them.
The former Liverpool striker scored the goal against Roma in the 1-1 draw, and brilliantly set up Messi's winner against Atletico.
A bad month for Barcelona but a good one for Suarez.
1. Sergi Roberto
5 of 5
A couple of months ago, few Barcelona fans would ever have imagined Sergi Roberto would top a list like this.
But Luis Enrique has reinvented him as a right-back and the 23-year-old has been outstanding.
Although he impressed there in August, the first true test came against Atletico, and Roberto put in a superb 90 minutes against Antoine Griezmann.
He was solid against Roma and Las Palmas, producing a swirling cross for Luis Suarez to head home in the latter game.
And although he was unfairly left out against Bayer Leverkusen, when he was brought on he catalysed Barcelona's comeback, stabbing home from close range to level the tie.
Going forward, he will be hugely important because of his versatility.
Roberto will be utilised both in defence and midfield in the months to come and Barcelona fans will be praying his form isn't just temporary.
