Tony Romo Injury: Twitter Reacts to Cowboys Star Breaking Clavicle

Matt FitzgeraldSep 20, 2015

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered a fractured left clavicle in Sunday's Week 2 NFC East showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mark Maske of the Washington Post reported the sad news on Romo's status. Pro Football Talk cited a source in indicating the projected timeline for Romo's return is set at eight weeks. CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported the same Romo recovery timeline as Pro Football Talk.

The NFL's official Twitter account provided footage of the play when Romo went down:

Because of Romo's profile and importance as the quarterback for America's Team, the nation reacted on social media to his sudden severe injury.

NBA player Quincy Acy resorted to pop culture to express the pain felt by many in witnessing Romo crumble to the turf in agony at Lincoln Financial Field:

Failed former Cleveland Browns first-round QB Brandon Weeden entered the lineup in place of Romo. Instead of seeing what else Weeden has to offer on the gridiron, some are already calling on Jerry Jones to wheel and deal for another signal-caller.

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller and Peter Burns of ESPN are in that camp, suggesting different alternatives to fill in for Romo:

Some roto experts chose to frame Romo's injury in a fantasy context. NFL Network's Michael Fabiano believes Dallas will revert more predominantly to its offensive identity from last year, when it employed reigning league rushing champion DeMarco Murray:

Kofie Y. of USA Today lamented how Murray, now with the Eagles, couldn't get anything going on the ground and how Romo's injury impacted a fantasy lineup:

Brad Evans of Yahoo Sports, though frequently inclined to analyze the fantasy perspective, gave more of a general outlook for the Cowboys offense moving forward:

Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com had a far more optimistic outlook than even the most homer Dallas fans might have, much less the rest of the national media and those outside of the Cowboys locker room:

It is indeed probable that Dallas will rely heavily on its committee of running backs until Romo returns. The absence of superstar receiver Dez Bryant also won't help, leading Weeden or whoever is under center to check down to pass-catching backs in Lance Dunbar and Joseph Randle on a regular basis.

At least the Cowboys still have one of the NFL's best offensive lines, which ought to give Weeden some comfort as he tries to salvage a decent career and keep Dallas in the playoff race.

Two of the next three games for Dallas feature matchups with 2-0 teams in the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots. Both of those contests are at home, but it will take phenomenal complementary play around Weeden and the defense for the Cowboys to weather their significant early-season adversity of Romo being out.
