Terrelle Pryor Released by Browns: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldSep 10, 2015

The Cleveland Browns signed Terrelle Pryor with the hope of converting the former quarterback to wide receiver. Although he initially made the Browns' 53-man roster, the team announced Thursday it waived him and signed former Seattle Seahawks running back Robert Turbin.

Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot previously confirmed the transaction and reported what Pryor had to say about the Browns' decision.

"This will be a mistake by them," said Pryor, adding, "Nothing shocks me in this league anymore."

Pryor eventually cleared waivers and is free to sign with another team, per Cabot on Sept. 11.

Pryor is a tantalizing talent who has the upside, explosive athleticism and size (6'4", 223 lbs) to make a big impact as a wideout. A hamstring injury plagued Pryor this summer, though—preventing him from practicing in a critical time frame. The ailment limited him to second-half action in the final preseason game.

Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network supplied context for what Pryor's NFL future may hold:

It would have been interesting to see what Pryor could have done had he been healthier throughout training camp. He had familiarity with offensive coordinator John DeFilippo's system, having spent time with him in Oakland, but Pryor simply didn't show enough to merit a roster spot.

And that's saying something considering the current state of the Browns receiving corps. Newly acquired veteran Brian Hartline is listed as a starter opposite Andrew Hawkins on the official depth chart.

The current second-team receivers are Taylor Gabriel and Travis Benjamin. Hartline (6'2", 200 lbs) is the only one over 5'10" and 180 pounds.

Browns general manager Ray Farmer began serving his four-game suspension this past Sunday. This is yet another move that has to have fans questioning the franchise's latest front office regime.

ProFootballTalk.com's Zac Jackson brought up an interesting point in his analysis of the situation, which hints at the Browns' perpetual dysfunction:

Dwayne Bowe is the only other receiver on Cleveland's roster over 6'0". Farmer picked him up presumably in part because the GM worked in the Kansas City Chiefs front office when the team drafted Bowe in the first round in 2007. Bowe is guaranteed $9 million over two years but has hardly suited up for the Browns to date.

Cleveland's dearth of playmakers and Pryor's size-speed combination make the move to release him a surprise. Pryor has played quarterback in the NFL and could have functioned as an emergency third QB if needed while he healed up and further learned the nuances of his new position.

Until Josh Gordon comes back and plays well after what's at least a yearlong suspension, Farmer will continue to field criticism for his refusal to add pass-catchers who stick. The only receiver Farmer acquired from the past two loaded draft classes was 2015 fourth-round pick Vince Mayle, who was cut and didn't even get an invitation to the practice squad.

The Browns needed another back after trading Terrance West to the Tennessee Titans, so the move to pick up Turbin makes sense in that regard. The 25-year-old joins a backfield that consists of second-year former undrafted free agent Isaiah Crowell and rookie Duke Johnson, but Turbin is dealing with a high-ankle sprain.
