Bryson DeChambeau has missed the cut in all three majors this year, but put together an encouraging performance on Thursday.
DeChambeau shot a 3-under 67 to sit in a tie for the No. 4 spot on the British Open leaderboard. The two-time major champion recorded five birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Rory McIlroy didn't fare as well, as he amassed six bogeys in the first round. While McIlroy picked up an impressive birdie on his final hole, he still finished with a 2-over 72.
Scottie Scheffler is searching for his second consecutive Open Championship victory and remains within striking distance of the top spot on the leaderboard. Scheffler carded a 2-under 68, putting him three shots back from Suber.
The four-time major champion started off strong with four birdies across the first six holes, although he wasn't able to maintain his momentum through the end of the round.
Still, it isn't difficult to imagine Scheffler finding more consistency and climbing up the leaderboard on Friday.
