
British Open Prize Money, Purse Announced for Season's Final Major as Scheffler Eyes Repeat
The R&A announced prize money payouts for this year's Open Championship, which begins Thursday at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England.
The total purse is $17.75 million, with the winner receiving $3.2 million, according to Cameron Jourdan of Golfweek. The purse increased by $500,000, and first prize went up by $100,000.

A total of 156 players are participating in this year's Open Championship. The top 70 and ties will make the cut into the weekend. The prize money drops to $40,700 for 70th place.
The top 10 and ties after the cut line will get $12,900. The next 20 golfers (plus ties) take home $10,750. The remaining golfers will bring in $9,100.
Scottie Scheffler is the defending champion after shooting 17-under and winning by four strokes over Harris English at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. He is seeking his fifth major championship overall and second Open Championship.
Rory McIlroy is also a name to watch as he searches for his second Open Championship and seventh major. The defending back-to-back Masters winner took the 2014 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Merseyside, England.
This year will mark the 11th time Royal Birkdale will host the Open Championship. The last time occurred in 2017, when Jordan Spieth won at 12-under.
