Pinheiro Braathen,, who was born in Norway and competes for his mother's native Brazil, captured Brazil and South America's first-ever Olympic medal with his victory.
The Brazilian was the best skier in the field by almost a full second in the first of two runs.
The fantastic start gave Pinheiro Braathen enough cushion going into the second run, where he was the last competitor down the hill.
Pinheiro Braathen actually had the worst second-run time of every athlete that finished in the top five, but the first run was so strong that it helped him hold the advantage.
Switzerland's Marco Odermatt and Loic Meillard rounded out the medal podium.
Odermatt, who has 29 career World Cup wins in the giant slalom, came away with his third medal of the Milan Cortina Games, but none of them were gold.
Meillard earned his second medal in northern Italy. He was a silver medalist in the team combined.
