Oakland Raiders' Training Camp Injury Roundup

Moe MotonAug 3, 2015

Thankfully, the Oakland Raiders don’t have any major injuries to worry about in the early stages of training camp.

However, there are some mysterious no-shows from players who were active during organized team activities and mandatory minicamp before the six-week layoff.

"

Tough start to camp for Rod Streater, Clive Walford, and Trent Richardson. All in position battles, missing fourth straight day.

Head coach Jack Del Rio opted not to elaborate on the majority of these injuries except for categorizing all the players as day-to-day in an open press conference, per the team’s official website.

Trent Richardson

Trent Richardson

Del Rio had some commentary on the nature of one particular player. It’s up to you to read in between the lines as Silver and Black Pride writer Levi Damien did in his piece:

"

Today following practice he noted that Streater and Richardson have different issues they're dealing with and expanded upon Richardson's situation, notably that he has yet to reach the weight goals placed upon him by the team.

"Trent is here, he came back very close to the weight, which was a pretty ambitious goal to get to and he's down in the low 220s," said Del Rio. "That's what we asked of him, that's where he was as a player at 'Bama. I really believe with him committing himself like that and getting himself in that type of shape, he'll have a chance to come out here and show what he's really capable of."

"

Clearly, the focus here isn’t an illness. It’s conditioning. Offensive line coach Mike Tice made a comment about running back Trent Richardson shedding weight to Sirius XM NFL Radio (h/t Raiders.com) during the last week of OTAs. Apparently, Richardson’s still a work in progress as he continues to get himself ready for the practice field.

It’s astonishing that Richardson seems a bit behind schedule in his conditioning, considering what’s at stake for his career outlook. At this point, he needs every snap because his competition, running back Michael Dyer, continues to shine with extended reps, per ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson.

Stacy McGee

Defensive tackle Stacy McGee

Defensive tackle Stacy McGee is the lone player on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

McGee’s season outlook may take a hit after the Seattle Seahawks released veteran defensive tackle Tony McDaniel, per ESPN.com. The former Seahawks defensive tackle played for Del Rio for three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars and two seasons with Raiders defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr.

Promptly, general manager Reggie McKenzie expressed potential interest in McDaniel, per Oakland Tribune writer Jerry McDonald:

"

Among the other things McKenzie addressed in a 24-minute interview session with local writers:

The Raiders have likely made contact with recently released Seattle defensive tackle Tony McDaniel, a starter who has experience with defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr.

Asked if McDaniel could be added to the roster, McKenzie said, “There’s a chance.”

"

McDaniel isn’t going to shift mountains in Oakland, but he’d add solid depth behind starting defensive tackles Dan Williams and Justin Ellis. Despite a poor 2014 season, McDaniel posed as a viable obstruction to the run defense in 2013, per Pro Football Focus.

He’s a veteran with some juice left in the tank, which pushes McGee to the No. 4 or No. 5 defensive tackle on the roster with C.J. Wilson also in the mix.

Clive Walford

Tight end Clive Walford

The Raiders' third-round pick wasn’t placed on the PUP list or the non-football injury list, which makes his absence a head-scratcher.

He’s in competition for the No. 1 tight end position with Mychal Rivera, who’s making a great first impression on Del Rio, per 247Sports writer Jeremy Warnemuende:

"

"Having gone against him, I know he's an athletic guy," said Del Rio, formerly the defensive coordinator for the AFC West rival Broncos. "I think he showed some of that athleticism early here in this camp with a couple nice catches. We like the way he's worked throughout the offseason. He's continued to strengthen himself and better himself as a player."

"

This doesn’t change the fact that offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave will likely run plays out of two-tight end sets. Nonetheless, the excitement around Walford deflated after a fourth consecutive no-show on the practice field with question marks on his inactivity.

If you believe Del Rio (and he has no reason to lie), Walford will return pretty soon.

Rod Streater

The Raiders wide receiver corps hasn’t skipped a beat without Rod Streater. The four-year veteran remains on the NFI list, but Del Rio offered no indication about his illness or inability to practice.

Michael Crabtree leads the wide receiver corps as the star of the first few practices, per San Francisco Chronicle writer Vic Tafur on Twitter:

"

Cooper has been fine; Crabtree star of first 3 days https://t.co/GCuMEfDp9b

He’s arguably the best player through four training camp sessions, putting the crowd in awe with spectacular catches, per CSNBayArea.com reporter Scott Bair via Twitter:

"

Michael Crabtree made a few more acrobatic catches, including a highlight reel grab at practice's end. JDR: "he seems to do that every day."

— Scott Bair (@BairCSN) August 3, 2015"

Crabtree is entering a contract year and practices with a chip on his shoulder as a six-year veteran. He should emerge as quarterback Derek Carr’s No. 1 option for the beginning stages of the season until Amari Cooper finds his way as a rookie.

Streater isn't on the roster bubble and will likely enter the season as the No. 3 wide receiver. Hopefully, there are no complications with his foot that sidelined him for the majority of the 2014 season.
