Bangladesh vs. South Africa, 2nd Test: Day 1, De Kock Dropped, Steyn Gets 400
Bangladesh continued to give South Africa a run for their money in the ongoing Test series between the sides on Thursday. Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat, finishing the day on 246 for eight.
Triple figures are still lacking from the scorecard, though, and the weather continues to threaten. If it plays along, we could be in for a fascinating few days.
South Africa will want to wrap things up quickly on Day 2 and will then have to knuckle down to erase the deficit. Their batsmen were wholly disappointing in the first Test and need to up their game.

With Day 1 of the second Test done and dusted, here's a look at some of the takeaways from Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Quinton de Kock Sent Back to the Drawing Board
South Africa still find themselves in what people like to call a “transitional” period. Although it’s been three years since Mark Boucher retired, they have not yet found a permanent solution behind the stumps in the longest format of the game.
On the 2012 tour to England, Thami Tsolekile was roped in as backup but never played. AB de Villiers took the gloves instead. De Villiers was never completely stoked with 'keeping, though, and as Quinton de Kock continued to rise through the limited-overs ranks, they saw it fit to give him a chance.
But since injuring his ankle before the World Cup, De Kock has struggled. He has since played six Tests, managing two half-centuries, but he just hasn’t clicked recently. Dane Vilas probably won’t be a long-term solution, but it will give De Kock some time to go back to domestic cricket and work on his game.
Dale Steyn Makes It 400
Dale Steyn is now joint-second on the list of bowlers fastest to 400 wickets in Test cricket. Having finished on 399 in the first Test, Steyn wasted no time getting to the landmark. In the fifth over on Day 1, he had his man. Tamim Iqbal, playing a loose shot off a full and wide delivery, was caught by Hashim Amla in the slips to take Steyn to the magic 400 number.
Mushfiqur Rahim Gets Tetchy
Mushfiqur Rahim was given out, caught behind on what looked like him gloving the ball. The Bangladesh skipper reviewed the decision and Snicko showed only a very small spike.
The umpire found himself in the tricky spot of not really having incontrovertible evidence to show Rahim as being out. But because there wasn't exactly enough evidence to overrule the on-field decision, Rahim had to go. He clearly wasn't happy with the call and stamped off shaking his head.
South African commentator Pommie Mbangwa said on air that he didn’t think Rahim’s reaction was acceptable and that complaining about decisions should be “saved for the dressing room."
JP Duminy the All-Rounder
JP Duminy was one of South Africa's most successful bowlers on the first day. Not only did he take three wickets, he had a lower economy rate (1.80) than anyone else. Duminy didn't bowl much in the first Test but is becoming an increasingly useful player for South Africa.
