Latest Buzz Surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles Ahead of Training Camp

Dan ServodidioJul 29, 2015

In Philadelphia, it's Chip Kelly's world, and Eagles fans are just living in it—whether they agree with his roster decisions or not.

Kelly, the Eagles head coach and de facto general manager, will put his moves to the test on Monday when training camp gets underway at the NovaCare Complex.

The past offseason saw Kelly orchestrate a major overhaul of a team that went 10-6 and missed last season's playoffs—ultimately parting ways with six Pro Bowl players.

Nick Foles, LeSean McCoy, Jeremy Maclin, Evan Mathis, Todd Herremans—key cogs of the NFL's fifth-best offense in 2015—and Trent Cole were all shown the door.

Kelly, now in his third year at the helm in Philadelphia, said last season was simply not good enough for his own standards, via Jimmy Kempski of the Philly Voice:

"

Chip: "10-6, not going to the playoffs, is just like being 4-12."

— Jimmy Kempski (@JimmyKempski) July 26, 2015"

Kelly tried to put his moves in context during his pre-training camp press conference Tuesday, per Kempski:

"

Chip on guys they released: “Almost all the maneuvers we made with people going out were because of contracts."

— Jimmy Kempski (@JimmyKempski) July 26, 2015"

Kelly's "maneuvers" feature a trade for Sam Bradford in exchange for Foles and draft picks and the exile of star running back McCoy to Buffalo.

Bradford, who's missed 25 games over the past two seasons because of two separate ACL tears, brings uncertainty and skepticism with him to an Eagles fanbase cautiously trusting in Kelly.

Chip has a plan. Chip has a plan. Chip has a plan. Chip has a plan. Chip has a plan. Chip has a plan. Chip has a plan. Chip has a pla

Although Bradford is presumably the starting quarterback in Philadelphia, the elephant in the room is the former Heisman Trophy winner's health moving forward.

Kelly says history is in Bradford's favor, per Kempski:

"

Chip on Bradford's 2 ACL tears: "Our research in terms of dealing with guys with two ACLs, there’s a 10-to-12 percent chance of reinjury."

— Jimmy Kempski (@JimmyKempski) July 26, 2015"

CSNPhilly.com's Reuben Frank provided Kelly's full vote of confidence for his quarterback:

"

Everybody gets hurt in this game. I don’t know any quarterback who hasn’t missed time.

Tom Brady missed a year. Peyton Manning missed a year. Drew Brees has missed time. Nick Foles missed half a season. I mean, Aaron Rodgers has been hurt. I don’t know if there’s any quarterback in this league that hasn’t been hurt.

And if you haven’t, you’re probably young. That’s the deal. You’re going to get hurt in this game.

"

Frank also tweeted:

"

"Everybody in the NFL is 100% injury prone." Chip Kelly says Sam Bradford is no different than any other NFL player: http://t.co/p9zyEBPu8W

— Reuben Frank (@RoobCSN) July 27, 2015"

Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com points out the reality surrounding Bradford's perceived injury problems:

"

Bradford has played in 16 gms twice in 5 seasons. Vick, Foles and Sanchez have done just once more (three times) in a combined 21 seasons

— Eliot Shorr-Parks (@EliotShorrParks) July 27, 2015"

Despite coming to Bradford's defense, Kelly has insisted he'll be holding an open competition for the starting quarterback job between Bradford and last year's backup Mark Sanchez

Shorr-Parks shares the dangerous waters Kelly could find himself in, while Kempski provides Kelly's opinion on the matter:

"

Whether Chip actually makes it an open QB competition, who knows. But he is setting himself up for a tough spot if Sanchez does outplay Sam

"

Chip on QB competition: "If Sam throws 14 INTs and Mark throws 14 TDs I can’t sit there and tell the team that Sam’s going to start."

If his workouts are any evidence, maybe even newly acquired Tim Tebow has a shot.

NFL analyst Mike Mayock says it won't even matter who wins the job, via 97.5 The Fanatic:

"

“Regardless of who plays quarterback this year, I think they’re going to make the playoffs.” Mayock high on Eagles. http://t.co/e8Cb2j5fzt

— Tim McManus (@Tim_McManus) July 29, 2015"

Kelly hinted at what type of quarterback he's looking for—just not who exactly—via Kempski:

"

Chip: "We’d like to get a QB in here that we can hang our hat on & build the rest of the team around.” On if that's Bradford: "We'll see."

— Jimmy Kempski (@JimmyKempski) July 26, 2015"

It's clear the question of who will lead Kelly's juggernaut of an offense is dominating headlines ahead of next week's training camp.

As we've seen in the past, Mayock might be right. Kelly's offense has been one of the best in the league no matter the quarterback.

The Eagles head coach has proved he can run an uptempo, touchdown-filled attack with either a mobile veteran in Michael Vick, an eager youngster in Foles or a butt-fumbler in Sanchez.

The real debate might be in the running game, though.

Kelly turned heads when he traded away McCoy, the Eagles' franchise rushing leader, in March for linebacker Kiko Alonso.

Two days later, the Eagles signed free-agent running backs DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews. Pair them with the incumbent Darren Sproles, and all of a sudden, there's a lot of talent in Philly's backfield.

The three-headed rushing monster is an ideal situation for Kelly, whose offense lives and dies with the run.

When Murray's power and precision need a rest, Mathews can come in for a change of pace. In turn, Sproles can take his share of carries when he's not catching passes from the slot.

No matter who lines up to start in Week 1, there's no doubt the Eagles offense is the main story this training camp.

There's also no doubt Chip Kelly will enjoy leaving the Philadelphia press and fans in limbo.
