Alvarez Undergoes Surgery Following Setback
Tuesday, July 28
Joe Frisaro of MLB.com confirmed Alvarez had surgery to repair a tear in his shoulder. He added the surgery was an arthroscopic procedure and his status for 2016 is currently unclear.
Alvarez has been out since the end of May with shoulder inflammation in what has been a letdown season since his All-Star campaign in 2014. Starting the rehab process with two starts in Single-A, Alvarez ran into more trouble as he had a "setback" with his shoulder injury, per Frisaro.
In addition to the shoulder injury, D.J. Short of NBC Sports' Hardball Talk reported Alvarez had a tear in a ligament in his right elbow, but it "isn't known to be related" to the injury that has kept him out.
The 25-year-old was in his fifth season in the majors and was experiencing a nightmare start to it. In four starts, Alvarez was 0-4 with a 6.45 ERA, allowing 28 hits in 22.1 innings.
While recently getting back Jose Fernandez from Tommy John surgery, the Marlins' season is all but lost as they sit in fourth place in the National League East.
