Shane Mosley Jr. and Julian Pollard have been suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for failed drug tests in their Big Knockout Boxing bouts in June.
Dan Rafael of ESPN.com reported the news, though it's unclear how long both fighters will be out. Earlier this year, the NSAC implemented new, severe penalties for failed drug tests; however, because it will not put them into effect until the fall, it's unlikely either Mosley or Pollard will be subject to the punishments.
Shane Mosley Sr. weighed in on his son's failed drug test:
Although, Mosley's father ended up voicing his displeasure in this son: "You want 2 call Jr stupid? Call him an idiot for not telling commission? I agree. But he isn't on steroids. He is a clean kid. Just stupid...No1 is more disappointed then me. I am taking his ass in the ring and wearing him out. Grown man spanking. All he had 2do was write it down."
Mosley defeated Jay Kelly just 51 seconds into the first round of his debut bout for the BKB promotion. The son of legendary fighter Shane Mosley, Mosley Jr. was previously scheduled for an August fight in a standard boxing ring. No word has been given if that will go on as planned.
Pollard is one of the biggest faces in BKB, becoming the first heavyweight champion with a win over Rodney Hernandez. A late bloomer on the boxing scene, Pollard won 69-64 and 68-65 on the judges' scorecards.
Having two of their most notable names fail drug tests is undoubtedly a frustrating blow for BKB, a fledgling promotion trying to make a name on the national scene. It will be interesting to see how it handles the suspensions, especially with Pollard primed for a major push after becoming heavyweight champion.
Mosley was supposed to fight Daniel Henry on the Sergey Kovalev fight card on July 25, according to Ryan Burton of Boxing Scene. Obviously these developments have derailed that matchup for the time being.
