Adrian Wojnarowski Reportedly Agrees to New Contract with Yahoo Sports

Tim DanielsJul 21, 2015

Premier NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski is reportedly set to stay at Yahoo Sports after being pursued by Sports Illustrated. An official announcement about the new contract is expected this week.

Jason McIntyre of the Big Lead confirmed the news and reportedย SI previously felt good about its chances of convincing the high-profile reporter to make the switch. Everything changed when Yahoo President Marissa Mayer became involved, however.

Yahoo Sports is now prepared to make a "significant long-term commitment" to build NBA coverage around Wojnarowski, according to the Big Lead. Terms of the agreement with one of the top news-breakers in sports weren't included in the report. ย  ย ย

"Woj" is part of a small group of reportersโ€”ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter being the other prominent superstar of scoopsโ€”who have emerged as extremely valuable assets because of their vast amount of sources inside a sport.

He stole the spotlight during the 2015 NBA draft, when he regularly tweeted out the picks minutes before they were shown on the live television coverage. He's also the preeminent outlet for NBA news around the trade deadline and free agency.

Wojnarowski has also been the subject of criticism, though. Kevin Draper of the New Republic broke down his reporting style, including repeated shots at LeBron James, to which one team executive replied, "You can see something there that was very personal."

Regardless of what's going on behind the scenes, one thing is clear: Wojnarowski is the person other NBA insiders are battling against when it comes to breaking big stories, and more often than not in recent years, they have lost.

As a result, Yahoo is rewarding him with a new contract to continue breaking news under its umbrella. It's a key re-signing for the company in an era when breaking news is king because of the 24-hour news cycle.
