Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
If AJ Styles follows through on his plan to retire from in-ring competition next year, it is reportedly expected that he will do so in WWE.
According to Fightful Select (h/t Felix Upton of Ringside News), people close to Styles have said he is "content with his position" within WWE, and has no qualms about finishing his career in the company he has been with since 2016.
Fightful also shot down the likelihood of Styles jumping ship and closing out his career in AEW, noting that there is a "very slim chance" of that happening.
Ahead of his match against John Cena last weekend at Crown Jewel in Perth, Australia, Styles confirmed on the Crown Jewel Kickoff Show that he plans to retire in 2026.
The Phenomenal One explained his rationale, saying, "I am getting older. The fear of embarrassing myself is getting closer."
Even at 48 years of age, Styles showed once again that he is still among the best in-ring performers in the world, as he and Cena put on a classic match that the fans were fully invested in.
Although Styles came up short, he still has some positive momentum behind him, as he and Dragon Lee are set to challenge The Judgment Day's Finn Balor and JD McDonagh for the World Tag Team Championships next week on Raw.
After firmly establishing himself as the greatest performer in TNA history, Styles is now putting the finishing touches on a Hall of Fame career in WWE as well.
AJ is a two-time WWE champion, three-time United States champion, one-time intercontinental champion and one-time tag team champion, so it is only fitting that he reportedly plans to hang up his boots with the promotion that he has enjoyed so much success in for nearly the past decade.
Rey Mysterio Reportedly Progressing Toward Return from Injury
WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio is reportedly on the verge of taking the next step toward his in-ring return.
According to PWInsider.com (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats), Mysterio is due to be present at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, this week. He is also expected to return to in-ring action "relatively soon."
Mysterio, 50, underwent surgery in April to repair a torn abductor muscle, and he has been out of action ever since.
He suffered the injury during a match on the go-home episode of SmackDown before WrestleMania 41, which left him unable to compete in his scheduled match against El Grande Americano.
While out injured, Mysterio has made a handful of appearances, most notably at AAA events, given that WWE now owns the Mexican promotion.
At Worlds Collide last month, Rey had a backstage interaction with his son, Dominik Mysterio, ahead of Dom's AAA Mega Championship match against El Hijo del Vikingo.
Rey agreed to put the belt around Dominik's waist if he won, and despite the embarrassment that came along with it, Rey was a man of his word.
Next month, Survivor Series will be held in Mysterio's hometown of San Diego, making it the perfect weekend to make his in-ring return provided he is cleared in time.
Doing Rey vs. Dom in a AAA Mega Championship match in San Diego would likely be a massive draw, and with Rey reportedly getting closer to a return, it may not be outside the realm of possibility.
WWE Reportedly Open to IShowSpeed Match
Superstar streamer IShowSpeed reportedly could have a chance to work another match for WWE after making his in-ring debut during the men's Royal Rumble match earlier this year.
According to Fightful Select (h/t Ortman), Speed was at the WWE Performance Center recently to film for his YouTube series "Speed Goes Pro," and future WWE Hall of Famer Randy Orton acted as his mentor.
Fightful added that WWE "hasn't ruled out" the possibility of Speed wrestling a match for the company in the future.
At the 2025 Royal Rumble, Akira Tozawa got attacked during his entrance for the men's Rumble match. That sent WWE head of creative Triple H scrambling for a replacement backstage, and he chose Speed, who was there to create content.
Speed helped Bron Breakker eliminate Otis and celebrated with a backflip, only to eat one of the most devastating spears of Breakker's career. Bron then picked him up in a press slam and tossed Speed out of the ring.
While it was a quick debut, it made for a viral moment that will be shown in Royal Rumble video packages for many years to come.
WWE has always been willing to work with celebrities, and it has arguably become even more popular in recent years due to the success Logan Paul and Bad Bunny had transitioning into wrestling.
Most recently, country music star Jelly Roll turned in a strong performance as Orton's partner in a tag team match against Drew McIntyre and Paul at SummerSlam.
IShowSpeed has the athleticism to do some impressive things in the ring and the following WWE covets, so it may only be a matter of time before they work together again.
