Scott Quigg vs. Kiko Martinez: Winner, Recap and Reaction

Brian MaziqueJul 18, 2015

Any more questions?

Scott Quiggย (31-0-2, 23 KO) remained undefeated as he electrified the Manchester Arena with a dynamic second-round KO win over Kiko Martinez (32-6) Saturday night. The WBA regular super bantamweight champion has struggled to get the respect that other champions in his weight class have garnered.

After Saturday's performance, Quiggย undoubtedly opened some eyes. BBC Sport acknowledged hisย win:

In the first round, Martinez's pressure seemed to put Quigg on his heels a bit. Quigg quickly proved that round was simply a feeling-out frame. He wasted no time landing hard counter shots and floored Martinez early in the round.

Seconds after Martinez rose to his feet, Quigg launched a video game-like barrage on Martinez until a hard right hand dropped him for a second time. Martinez beat the count, but the glassy look in his eyes forced referee Terry O'Connor to call a halt to the bout.

Quigg has been chasing fights with every major champion in the division, but he's been primarily in pursuit of IBF champion and Ireland native Carl Frampton. The latter was also in action Saturday, and it was impossible not to compare the two fighters' simultaneous performances.

Let's just say Frampton had a much tougher time in his bout than did Quigg.

Ring Magazine's Douglass Fischer mentionedย Quigg's win and his rival's struggles across the pond.

Framptonย made his American debut against Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. and got more than he bargained for before winning a competitive unanimous decision.

Still, there's no question which super bantamweight looked the best between Quigg and Frampton on Saturday. To add even more intrigue to the situation, former five-divison champion Nonito Donaire scored his own second-round KO over Anthony Settoul in Macao, China, earlier in the day.

Per Boxing Monthly, he wants Quigg next:

Suddenly, it seems as if Quigg could be a much hotter commodity after a wild Saturday in the division.

When you consider thatย WBC champion Leo Santa Cruz will defend his title against Abner Mares August 29 in Los Angeles and WBA super and WBO champion Guillermo Rigondeaux will fight featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko in a catchweight bout, per Sky Sports, the weight region is becoming one of the most intriguing in the sport.

The rest of the year should be interesting.
