British Open Leaderboard 2015: Updating Results and Standings for Saturday

Sean ODonnellJul 18, 2015

We're finally back underway in the 2015 Open Championship.

After some heavy rains Friday, play was delayed for a total of three-and-a-half hours, causing 42 players to leave St. Andrews' Old Course in Scotland before completing their rounds because of darkness and resume play Saturday morning. Well, the weather continued to be uncooperative, as extremely high winds early in the day made the seaside track virtually unplayable.

Here's a look at the official statement from the Royal and Ancient Golf Club following the suspension of play early Saturday morning:

Those winds refused to subside, and play continued to be halted well into the evening. Finally, at 6 p.m. local time (1 p.m. ET), golfers were allowed back onto the course to finish the second round of play. However, because of time restrictions, the tournament's third round will now take place Sunday, and its final round will take place Monday, according to the R&A.

This marks the first time we'll see The Open Championship finish on a Monday since 1988, when the legendary Seve Ballesteros hoisted the Claret Jug.

There may not be much golf to watch for the remainder of Saturday afternoon, but at least you can catch players such as Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Louis Oosthuizen in action as they attempt to jockey for position. That said, here's a look at the current tournament leaderboard.

Friday Recap

While we watch the 42 players who were unable to finish take to the Old Course to complete their second rounds, let's take a look at some notable performances from golfers who have already completed 36 holes of play.

The biggest surprise in this year's Open Championship has to be Danny Willett. The Englishman is on a torrid pace at St. Andrews, as he fired a six-under 66 to start the tournament and followed that up with a three-under 69 to move to nine under and gain the clubhouse lead.

Willett navigated some treacherous conditions with perfection early Friday, as the world No. 39 birdied the second, fifth and ninth holes to make the turn with a three-under 33. He did go on to birdie the 10th, but the more difficult back nine started to rear its ugly head as Willett bogeyed the 15th and 17th holes. He did manage to finish with a birdie on the 18th to return to even par for the back side.

No stranger to success on big stages, Willett was once ranked the No. 1 amateur in the world and defeated current world No. 1 Rory McIlroy in the 2007 British Amateur Championship final. He hasn't lived up to his potential since, winning just his second European Tour title earlier this year. Still, his game appears to be heading in the right direction, and he has a lead in a major championship to show for it.

During a press conference, per the Associated Press (via PGATour.com), Willett explained that the time he spent in amateur golf provided confidence and helped elevate his play to this level.

"Amateur and professional golf are very, very different, but it put me in good stead," he said. "It made me believe that I could compete with the best of them. It's a work-in-progress, and it's nice that it has come off this week."

A contingent of four golfers all sit at seven under through 36 holes and are in great position heading into the third round. Of the quartet, Marc Warren has been the most consistent, as he is the only player who has produced two sub-70 rounds. However, he's joined at the seven-under mark by Zach Johnson, Adam Scott and Robert Streb.

Slightly behind them is Justin Rose, who sits at five under through two rounds. The Englishman didn't get off to a great start, as he failed to take advantage of Thursday's pristine conditions and shot a one-under 71. He managed to right the ship in a big way Friday, navigating through some nasty weather to shoot a four-under 68.

Rose began in brilliant fashion in Round 2, recording three consecutive birdies on the third, fourth and fifth holes to make the turn with a three-under 33. A difficult back nine gave him some early trouble, as he bogeyed the 11th and 12th holes, but he remained resilient and recorded another trio of birdies thereafter. Following that performance, he'll have plenty of momentum heading into Sunday.

Jimmy Walker also managed to put together one of Friday's better rounds after failing to take advantage of Thursday's conditions. The American opened the tournament with an even-par 72 but went on to record five birdies, one bogey and 12 pars for a four-under 68 in Round 2. He'll look to continue climbing the leaderboard on moving day.

As for players who won't be sticking around for the weekend, it's likely that we've seen the end of the tournament for Brandt Snedeker, Ryan Moore, Keegan Bradley, J.B. Holmes, Ian Poulter, Bubba Watson and others. They are all at two over or worse through 36 holes, and the expected cut line remains at even par.

One player who deserves some special recognition is the 65-year-old Tom Watson. Playing in his last Open Championship, Watson followed up his first-round 76 with an 80 on Friday, finishing 12 over par through 36 holes and missing the cut. He took his final walk over the Swilcan Bridge on Friday evening and left behind some of golf's greatest moments during his five Open Championship victories over his illustrious career.
