British Open Weather 2015: Updated Forecast at St. Andrews

Windy conditions have halted play at the Open Championship for the second consecutive day, but the winds died down eventually, which allowed at least some golf to be played Saturday at St. Andrews. However, the third round was moved to Sunday, while the final round was moved to Monday.

Round 2 Continues After Significant Delay

Saturday, July 18

After previously hoping to start by 12:30 p.m. EST (5:30 p.m. BST), the R&A pushed back the start time by another 30 minutes due to wind:

Even though play ultimately continued as anticipated, the plan is for the golfers who didn't finish their second rounds to do so Saturday, which would push the third and fourth rounds back one day each:

Monday finishes at majors are rare with the exception of the 18-hole playoff at the U.S. Open, but the poor weather will create an interesting dynamic for the 2015 British Open's final round.

Per the Open Championship's official Twitter account, the tournament hasn't finished on a Monday since Seve Ballesteros won in 1988.

Second-round play did carry on shortly early Saturday morning, but the wind ultimately proved too strong to play through.

That led to some criticism from many, including ESPN announcer Scott Van Pelt:

Golfer David Hearn was also none too happy with the manner in which the R&A handled the order of play since there was seemingly no uniform plan:

After play was halted Saturday, the R&A attempted to explain the rationale behind allowing golfers to take the course despite the extreme conditions:

The weather in Scotland is always fairly unpredictable, so it is somewhat understandable why tournament organizers didn't have a firm grasp on the conditions.

They were also under pressure to get in as much golf as possible, but now that the decision has been made to push the final round back to Monday, they have some leeway provided the weather starts to cooperate.
