Dustin Poirier Says He'd Face Nate Diaz in Boxing Fight After UFC Retirement
After retiring from the UFC this summer, Dustin Poirier is willing to lace up his gloves one more time, but not in MMA.
Poirier made a surprising declaration on social media that he would be willing to fight one more time in a boxing match against longtime rival Nate Diaz.
"Zuffa Boxing, [12 rounds], me and Nathaniel, I'd do it," Poirier tweeted late Monday night. "Only [one] more fight I'd take."
Poirier and Diaz have been circling one another since their scheduled UFC fight in 2018 fell through. ESPN's Brett Okamoto explained that both fighters blame one another for the fight not happening.
"Poirier claimed Diaz's prolonged negotiations with the UFC on the fight was the main reason it didn't happen, while Diaz accused Poirier of pulling the plug due to lingering injuries," Okamoto stated. "Diaz even went on to say he felt he held a win over Poirier because of Poirier's decision to address the injuries to his hip."
Poirier ended his UFC career in July in a pre-announced retirement fight against Max Holloway in his home state of Louisiana. Diaz departed the UFC in 2022 and made his professional boxing debut the following year against Jake Paul. He most recently fought in July 2024 in a boxing match against fellow former UFC star Jorge Masvidal. He hasn't yet responded to Poirier's call-out.
"I'm retired, I'm done, but Nate is one that got away," Poirier wrote in a follow-up tweet.
Poirier's declaration came after Zuffa Boxing announced a long-term broadcasting partnership with Paramount+ and CBS. With UFC president and CEO Dana White leading the company, he could try to put together a match between two of the UFC's biggest former stars to finally settle their differences.
