ACC Ref Reportedly Quits over Handling of Video Review in Syracuse's OT Win vs. UConn

Zach BacharSep 12, 2025

ACC referee Gary Patterson quit due to frustration surrounding the method a review was handled during Syracuse's 27-20 overtime win over UConn on Saturday, according to ESPN's Andrea Adelson and David Hale.

With just over one minute left in the first half, Syracuse quarterback Steve Angeli's arm was hit as he threw an incomplete pass beyond the line of scrimmage on first down.

The Orange lined up and snapped the ball on second down, which ended up being another incomplete pass. A flag was thrown during the play before Patterson, the head referee for the game, announced that "replay had buzzed in prior to the previous play" (via Adelson and Hale).

The first-down incomplete pass call was eventually upheld.

Per Adelson and Hale, there was "no physical indication by any official on the field that they had been buzzed by the replay booth" prior to the second-down incomplete pass.

Patterson ultimately resigned because he was upset at the ACC's interference in forcing a replay after the next play had already occurred as the directive to review came from the ACC command center, according to Adelson and Hale.

Referees are typically buzzed by the replay booth to stop play and initiate a review.

Following the negated second-down play, Syracuse picked up five yards with a pass from Angeli to Dan Villari on the new second down.

Syracuse ended the drive with a field goal, trailing 14-6 at halftime before putting together a resurgent second-half performance that ended with an overtime victory.
