British Open Schedule 2015: Thursday Tee Times, TV Coverage and Live Stream

The 2015 Open Championship is officially underway in Fife, Scotland, and several of the world's best players are having their way with St Andrews' Old Course due to soft conditions taming the usually firm track.

We could be on a collision course with a rematch of the infamous U.S. Open showdown between Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson, as the duo are lighting up St Andrews. Through 11 holes, both players are six under par and tied for the lead. They are playing some impeccable golf right now and have combined for 10 birdies, one eagle and zero bogeys to this point.

On the other side of the coin, not every notable player was able to take advantage of a susceptible St Andrews early on Thursday. Tiger Woods is aiming to prove he can get back to contending status in major tournaments, but he's not off to a good start, making the turn with a four-over 40. After adding another bogey on the 10th, he's five over for the day.

Spieth on His Way to World No. 1

The most notable absence at St Andrews is world No. 1 Rory McIlroy. The defending champion opted to skip the tournament in an effort to allow his recently injured ankle to heal. That opened the door for Spieth to potentially overtake the Northern Irishman atop the world rankings with a win. He's off to a good start.

This is Spieth's first tournament at the Old Course, but he's playing it like it's his hometown track. Sure, he's in great form and has every shot in the book at his disposal, but one of the biggest reasons for his early success is his meticulous preparation—he even went as far as practicing shots off the wall on the Road Hole.

Spieth is embracing every aspect of The Open Championship and is prepared for whatever comes his way. Here's what he had to say during a press conference, via Chris Borg of CNN.com:

"

I think it's fun. If we wanted good weather, we'd go and play in California. We come over here because we want to embrace the opportunity of handling these conditions.

But I don't think there's anything more special in golf than playing an Open Championship at the home of golf.

"

Should Spieth go on to hoist the Claret Jug, we'll be looking at a 21-year-old holding the world's No. 1 record and staring in the face of a possible Grand Slam.

Johnson Looking Confident at St Andrews

After his brutal meltdown at Chambers Bay, no one knew exactly what to expect from Johnson at St Andrews. After all, this is his first tournament since his three putt on the 72nd hole of the U.S. Open led to a disappointing runner-up finish, falling just one stroke behind Spieth.

So far, things are looking up for the big-hitting American, as he's played some impeccable early golf on the Old Course, which included an eagle on the par-five fifth hole. Due to the soft conditions, Johnson's length off the tee will be an enormous advantage, as he'll be able to severely shorten the course and hit shorter irons into St Andrews' massive greens.

Johnson has a knack of leading major championships, as cleverly noted in this tweet from PGA Tour:

However, he also has a long history of meltdowns as well. His thee putt on the final hole of the 2015 U.S. Open wasn't his only catastrophe in a major. He shot an 82 in the final round of the 2010 U.S. Open in a historic implosion. He's also had opportunities to close out the 2010 PGA Championship and 2011 Open Championship but failed each time.

Can he finally claim a major this time around, or will his late struggles return once more? We won't know until Sunday.

Tiger Looking Finished as Major Contender

Earlier in the year, Woods looked like he would finally find his form and begin contending for major championships once again after his tie for 17th in the Masters. Well, that finish is beginning to look like a fluke, as the former world No. 1 was horrendous in the U.S. Open, shooting 80, 76 to miss the cut by a huge margin. He isn't doing himself any favors at St Andrews, either.

Woods began his day in ominous fashion, taking bogeys at the first and second holes. After briefly righting the ship with a pair of pars on Nos. 3 and 4, he began to move further into the black with dropped shots on the fifth and seventh holes. That led to a 40 on the front nine, putting Woods well on his way to shooting yet another 80 in a major.

We'll see what the back nine holds for Woods, but this isn't looking promising. Blowing up on a tricky course like Chambers Bay is one thing; however, doing the same on the Old Course is entirely different. Woods has always had an affinity for St Andrews, and he's played very well there in the past, winning Open Championships on the track in 2000 and 2005.

If Woods can't figure out how to score on a soft St Andrews track that is practically giving away birdie opportunities, it may signify the end of his time as a contender. As of now, Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 major victories appears to be safe.
