Buy or Sell Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns Rumors, a Cody Rhodes Heel Turn and More
The biggest WWE PLE of the summer might be over with the two-night SummerSlam concluded, yet it feels like the pro wrestling rumor mill is only just getting started.
So it goes when those two nights were filled with major items like John Cena's sudden shift into an encounter with a returning name like Brock Lesnar.
And that’s just the headline item coming out of SummerSlam. The rumor mill happens to carry plenty of its usual staples, too, such as injury speculation, major future plans for names like Roman Reigns and even rumblings about a retirement match.
In an effort to help fans sort through the noise, here’s a look at the top pro wrestling rumors to know and whether fans should buy or sell on each.
Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins…When?
1 of 5
The Rumor
Another clash between Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins feels inevitable. According to WrestleVotes Radio (h/t Wrestle Ops), WWE is banking that for a future to-be-decided PLE.
Reaction
Sort of a no kidding here, right? Still, it’s compelling to think about the when. There wasn’t a logistical reason to have it happen at SummerSlam. And Reigns is part-time right now while Rollins holds a top belt, so there’s a clash there in terms of scheduling conflicts. Fans understand this in the blurred-lines era, too, and won’t complain if they have to wait until WrestleMania.
Buy or Sell?
Easiest buy of the week. One has to think that WWE will hold Reigns vs. Rollins for ‘Mania. It’s the feud and an obvious main event, title at stake or not.
Seth Rollins Injury Buzz
2 of 5
The Rumor
Storyline or not? Paul Heyman recently told Ariel Helwani (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats) that Rollins wasn’t actually injured leading up to his cash-in and title win over CM Punk.
Reaction
This follows a rumor from Dave Meltzer (h/t Ortman) that Rollins was originally planned to win on Saturday and defend it in a match on Sunday. It’s all tough to believe, frankly, given that everyone saw Rollins’ knee buckle when he suffered the injury.
Buy or Sell?
Major sell. It only makes sense now for WWE to pass the whole thing off as planned. In reality, it’s pretty hard to fake an injury that well and seemed obvious that they were uncertain of the injury outlook before seeing how the recovery timetable lined up with major events. Either way, this is the fun of pro wrestling, right?
Cody Rhodes Heel Turn?
3 of 5
The Rumor
Forget it. According to WrestleVotes Radio (h/t Wrestle Ops), WWE has no plans to turn Cody Rhodes heel. The outlet noted (h/t Ortman) that any hint of it was done to “work the hardcore fans” and nothing more.
Reaction
Working the most dedicated fans with something that will perhaps never happen seems silly, really. But…it also seems on brand for WWE. Rhodes going bad has been long requested by fans since his AEW days and doesn’t appear any closer to happening.
Buy or Sell?
Sell on trying to work the fans with a Rhodes heel turn. More likely? It’s just modern WWE character work that sits more in the gray area. But buy on WWE not planning a Rhodes heel turn, as it continues to vibe that the Superstar himself doesn’t want to do it.
John Cena’s Final Match?
4 of 5
The Rumor
Where and when does John Cena say his official goodbye? According to Wrestling Observer Live’s Bryan Alvarez (h/t Ortman), it happens in December at another edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event. Dave Meltzer added that the TD Garden in Boston doesn’t have publicly announced events in the middle of December yet.
Reaction
While this has been hinted at before, it seems odd that Cena would say goodbye on a SNME like Goldberg just did. No shade meant for Goldberg, either, but fans have surely always envisioned Cena’s final farewell happening at a major PLE, with ‘Mania top of the list.
Buy or Sell?
Sell Cena’s final match happening at a SNME. It deserves a bigger stage. That happening would set unrealistic expectations for future SNME events, too. Plus, this is pro wrestling, where plans always change. Never mind that fans have seen plenty of Superstars “retire” only to have another match years down the road.
Roman Reigns Schedule?
5 of 5
The Rumor
Maybe fans will see Reigns sooner than expected. According to WrestleVotes (h/t Ortman), there has been a change of plans and he’ll have a tag match at Clash in Paris.
Reaction
This year’s show from Paris La Défense Arena in France is on August 31, so it’s a little weird to think Reigns will be back so soon after super-obviously being written on television this past week during a beatdown segment.
Buy or Sell?
Buy. There are ways around the written-off-TV thing, even if it’s just Reigns showing up at the last second to help out Jey Uso or something. And these international shows get weird attendees and unexpected developments all the time. Reigns sticking in the occasional tag match at major events before a full-time singles run against Rollins at a later date makes a lot of sense.
