Ty Lawson Arrested: Latest Details, Reaction and More on Nuggets PG
Point guard Ty Lawson has landed on the hot seat in Denver this offseason as the Nuggets beefed up their backcourt by drafting Emmanuel Mudiay and re-signing Jameer Nelson, but he may have punched his ticket out of town after getting arrested for reportedly driving under the influence early Tuesday morning.
According to TMZ, the 27-year-old veteran was taken into custody in Los Angeles after failing a field-sobriety test. This was his second arrest of 2015, as he was previously arrested in January for suspicion of DUI.
"We have been notified of an incident involving Ty Lawson this morning in Los Angeles," Nuggets general manager Tim Connelly said in a statement, according to Jesse Paul and Christopher Dempsey of the Denver Post. "We will not have further comment on the matter."
Paul and Dempsey reported that Lawson was being held on $5,000 bail. They also passed along more details of the arrest:
"The California Highway Patrol says Lawson was pulled over driving a white Mercedes-Benz on U.S. 101 — known as the Hollywood Freeway — after an officer spotted him traveling "at a high rate of speed" about 1:30 a.m.
"He displayed several signs of symptoms of alcohol intoxication," officer Kevin Tao told The Denver Post.
Tao said Lawson had $6,000 in cash on him at the time of his arrest.
"He verbally identified himself as a professional basketball player for the Denver Nuggets," Tao said.
"
On July 17, TMZ reported Lawson will enter a 30-day rehab facility. A judge also ordered Lawson to be on monitored sobriety.
This offseason has been a tumultuous one for Lawson, as his name has been the subject of trade talks. Denver drafted Mudiay in the first round of June's NBA draft and followed that up with the reported re-signing of Nelson on Monday, per ESPN.com's Marc Stein.
Based on the Nuggets' moves, Bleacher Report's Howard Beck believes it is a foregone conclusion Lawson will be dealt prior to the season:
Following the arrest, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported a "few teams" had interest in the point guard, but his value has "cratered" after the arrest.
Lawson's former teammate, Chauncey Billups, recently questioned his leadership ability in an interview with 104.3 The Fan in Denver, via James Herbert of CBSSports.com.
"Ty, he has not demonstrated what you want from the leader of your team and a guy who they've handed the keys to," Billups said. "He's not demonstrated the kind of leadership that you want. And you have a young kid named Mudiay coming in who I think has a chance to be a star in this league."
Lawson averaged 15.2 points and a career-high 9.6 assists per game this past season, but the Nuggets have missed the playoffs in consecutive years and have never made it out of the first round during his tenure.
There is no question the former North Carolina standout is a supremely talented player, but the Nuggets would probably be wise to move on from him.
Now that he has another off-court issue hanging over his head, though, consummating a trade may become more difficult.
