Danica Patrick, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Involved in Crash at Quaker State 400
Dale Earnhardt Jr. said Danica Patrick will "chill out" following her expletive-ridden tirade at the driver of the No. 88 car following their incident in Saturday's Quaker State 400.
"She will chill out," Earnhardt told reporters. "It happens to all of us. I'm not too worried about it. I got a pretty good friend, so I think we will be able to talk it out."
Earnhardt, who had been having brake issues throughout the race, ran into the back of Patrick's No. 10 car on Lap 206, driving her into the wall.
"F--k 88," Patrick said to her team, per Troy Machir of Sporting News. "Did he f-----g hit me? Go f--k yourself. Really?"
Patrick then ran into the back of Earnhardt's car in frustration as the two went into pit road. After the race, Earnhardt apologized while blaming his car's faulty brakes for the crash, per Nick Bromberg of Yahoo Sports:
"[The brakes] got worse and worse and worse and I probably shouldn’t have been racing as hard as I was when we ran into the back of Danica. But I went into that corner and mashed the brakes to the floor. I pumped it three times all the way to the floor and then ran into her. There wasn’t anything I could do. It sucks. I don’t like running into Danica because it gets a little too much attention, but I’m sorry for that.
"
Earnhardt, who is currently fourth in the Sprint Cup standings, wound up finishing 21st. Patrick, currently 22nd in points, was 34th. She has not had a top-10 finish in a points race since NASCAR's trip to Bristol Motor Speedway in April. It's highly likely those struggles played a part in her lashing out at Earnhardt, who gave Patrick her first break in stock-car racing at JR Motorsports in 2010.
Either way, with two of the most high-profile names in racing involved, don't expect this story to die down anytime soon. Even if Patrick eventually "chills out."
Both Patrick and Earnhardt will be hoping for better days at the track when they compete in the New Hampshire 301 on July 19.
