Paul got off to a strong start, pumping his jab and scoring some early offense while Chávez was notably reticent to throw much offense. He did not appear to land a single punch in the opening frame.

Chávez predictably caught some flak for the lack of offense.

Paul continued to work his offense, ripping strong hooks to the body behind his jab. Meanwhile, Chávez continued to look like someone who started playing a boxing game but dropped the controller.

By the fourth round, it was just impressive that Chávez actually threw a punch.

Paul was on cruise control until the ninth round. Chávez’s legendary father was not happy with his son’s performance.

That’s was untl the ninth round when the elder fighter picked up the pace and had a few good moments against Paul. He ended up taking the final two rounds on a few scorecards, but it was far too little, too late.

Paul's boxing career has featured an eclectic mix of opponents. Chávez might have the best combination of age and boxing bonafides that he has taken on so far.

Chávez, the son of boxing legend Julio César Chávez, is a former world champion himself. At 39, he's much younger than the 58-year-old Mike Tyson who was Paul's most recent opponent.

Regardless of how one feels about Paul's foray into boxing, there's no doubt that his ambition and promoting skills are some of the best in the business.

He's remained insistent throughout the process that it's still about chasing a world title one day, though.

"There's a two-sided approach for me where I have the big name to do big fights and we'll entertain those," Paul told Andreas Hale of ESPN. "But at the same time, I'm in this to become world champion."

Whether Paul will ever get to that level is very much up for debate. What's clear is that his boxing career isn't going away any time soon.

The choice to fight a former world champion who is under the age of 40 could be a sign that he's getting closer to fighting real boxers in their primes.

He has recently made several comments about fighting Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Boxing's biggest star has a huge matchup with Terence Crawford set for September.

That kind of fight might still be a pipe dream for Paul, but he's continuing to build momentum with this win over Chavez.
