Wyndham Clark Apologizes for Damaging Oakmont Locker at US Open, 'I Made a Mistake'

Playing at Oakmont Country Club can be an irritating experience for even the world's best golfers, but Wyndham Clark took his frustration an extra step when he damaged lockers inside the clubhouse after missing the cut at the U.S. Open.

He apologized for the incident Thursday.

"I've had a lot of highs and lows in my career, especially this year some lows," Clark told reporters. "I made a mistake that I deeply regret. I'm very sorry for what happened.

"But I'd also like to move on, not only for myself but for Oakmont, for the USGA, and kind of focus on the rest of this year and things that come up. I still want to try to make the Ryder Cup team. I still am on the outside looking in for the FedExCup. So I'm starting to move on and focus on those things."

Cameron Jourdan of Golfweek noted Clark also damaged a T-Mobile sign at the PGA Championship in May, so it isn't the first time something like this has happened this year.

He was surely frustrated with himself at Oakmont, as he missed the cut at eight-over through two rounds. It was the sixth consecutive event he finished in 50th place or worse during a season that has seen him tally just one top-10 finish (Houston Open in March).

It is a far cry from 2024 when Clark won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am and finished with eight top-10 finishes during an excellent season.

Clark surely wasn't the only one who was frustrated with Oakmont, as victor J.J. Spaun was the only player in the entire field to finish under par. He only did so with an incredible birdie putt to win it on the final hole, which brought his tournament score to one-under.

At least Clark can take solace knowing he was much better Thursday in the opening round of the Travelers Championship with a six-under 64 that put him just two strokes back of early leader Austin Eckroat.
