Winners and Losers from the 2015 John Deere Classic

Ben AlberstadtJul 12, 2015

Jordan Spieth. What can you say? The 21-year-old Texan is pretty good at winning these golf-tournament things.

A day after Spieth lit up TPC Deere Run to the tune of a 61, he came out flat during the tournament's final round before turning it on late (as champions are prone to do) to take down Tom Gillis in a playoff. He'll head to St. Andrews as the first golfer to win four times before The Open since Tiger Woods in 2000.

Beyond Spieth, our rundown features a quintessential journeyman and an air cannon.

Click through for this week's "Winners and Losers."

Winner: Jordan Spieth

1 of 8

Jordan Spieth was at it again at the John Deere Classic. Spieth was rusty during his opening-round 71. “My first round of 18 holes since the U.S. Open was yesterday, and, you know, I certainly saw a lot of rust yesterday," he told reporters Thursday.

Fortunately, the golf world didn't need to hit the panic button as the 21-year-old rebounded with a six-under second-round 64. And he was even better Saturday, when he carded a career-low 10-under 61 to vault to the top of the leaderboard.

Maintaining his commitment to return to the venue where he recorded his first PGA Tour victory two years ago, world No. 2 Jordan Spieth was the subject of much discussion entering the week with many questioning the wisdom of competing the week before heading overseas to the Open Championship.

And while Spieth didn't have his best stuff Sunday, he got the job done late. One over through his first 12 holes, Spieth reeled off four birdies over the closing six holes to join Tom Gillis in a playoff. From there, the 21-year-old winning machine held his nerve, while the journeyman faltered.

An impressive sendoff for St. Andrews, indeed.

Loser: Bubble Guys

2 of 8

This week was the last chance for players to earn a spot in next week's Open Championship via the Open Championship series, which awards a spot to the top four finishers who have not already qualified for the season's third major.

Will Wilcox, Steve Wheatcroft, Kevin Chappell and Jason Bohn all found themselves on the outside looking in.

Alternatively, Tom Gillis, Chris Stroud, Johnson Wagner and Justin Thomas all secured spots at St. Andrews.

Winner: The Danny Lee Girlfriend Quest

3 of 8

After winning last week's Greenbrier Classic, Danny Lee admitted that he was disappointed he didn't have a girlfriend to share his victory with.

The 24-year-old New Zealander hasn't gotten a great deal of television time or exposure in the United States. All that changed with his Greenbrier win and the widespread publicity of his empty-hotel-room dilemma.

A Saturday 62, which left him just one stroke out of the lead entering Sunday's final round, again garnered Lee broad exposure, thus making Mr. Lee not only a highly eligible but also a highly visible bachelor.

Lee finished tied for third.

Losers: Non-American Golfers

4 of 8

Looking at the top-10 finishers at the John Deere Classic on PGATour.com's leaderboard, and there was an abundance of American flags.

Perhaps it's fitting that American golfers rose to top at a tournament sponsored by a quintessential American brand.

Check out the top 10.

  • 1 Jordan Spieth (USA) -20
  • 2 Tom Gillis (USA) -20
  • T3 Zach Johnson (USA) -19
  • T3 Danny Lee (NZ) (but lives in Dallas) -19
  • T5 Chris Stroud (USA) -18
  • T5 Johnson Wagner (USA) -18
  • T5 Justin Thomas (USA) -18
  • T8 Steve Wheatcroft (USA) -16
  • T8 Will Wilcox (USA) -16
  • T8 Kevin Chappell (USA) -16
  • T8 Daniel Summerhays (USA) -16

Winner: The Zach Johnson Birdie Express

5 of 8

Zach Johnson hasn't carded a score in the 70s since 2008 at the John Deere Classic. He's now shot 27 consecutive rounds in the 60s at TPC Deere Run and is 119 under during that stretch.

Since 2004, DJ has recorded 224 birdies at TPC Deere Run (entering the final round).

Sunday, Johnson added another seven birdies before an air cannon derailed things.

He finished tied for third.

Loser: Anyone Who Didn't Expect Brian Harman to Make This Putt

6 of 8

Facing a 60-footer for eagle on the par-five second hole during his third round, Brian Harman would have done well to two-putt from the position.

Instead, the left-hander rolled it in.

Check out the eagle bomb in the video above.

Winner: Tom Gillis

7 of 8

Journeyman Tom Gillis pulled a regular Bob May at the John Deere Classic, carding an inspired final round before facing down the best player in the game in a playoff.

The 48-year-old, who spent last season on the Web.com Tour, hasn't finished inside the top 25 this season and has missed five of his last eight cuts.

Thus, few people expected the Michigan native to post a Sunday 64 to finish the tournament tied for the lead. And while Gillis did ultimately fall to Spieth on the second playoff hole, the victory matches the best finish of his career, and it earns him a spot in next week's Open Championship.

Not bad for a guy few could have expected to make the cut.

Loser: Air Cannon Guy

8 of 8

Zach Johnson stood over a birdie putt at the par-three 16th hole at TPC Deere run Sunday and...

BANG!

Some idiot cruising by on the abutting river fired an air cannon that had the Iowa native jumping out of his skin. Johnson looked rattled and offered an unimpressive first putt before managing to roll in a three-footer for par.

Johnson never really looked comfortable over the final two holes and finished at 19 under, tied for third, one stroke out of the playoff.
