US Open Golf Leaderboard 2025 Review of Top Scorecards and Player Stats on Day 2

Joe TanseyJun 13, 2025

Sam Burns did what many people would deem impossible on Friday at the 2025 US Open.

Burns claimed the 36-hole lead at Oakmont Country Club with a five-under 65, the best round of the tournament through two rounds.

Burns holds a one-shot lead over 18-hole leader JJ Spaun, who dropped two shots after his opening-round 66.

Viktor Hovland is the only other golfer under or after 36 holes at Oakmont Country Club.

The difficult major venue was not kind to most of the rest of the field. Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm are both four-over and Rory McIlroy sits at six-over.

Sam Burns' Low Round Puts Him In Lead

3 of 4
2025 U.S. OPEN - Round Two

Sam Burns produced a rare five-under round at a course known for high scores.

The American carded his 65 from the morning wave of tee times. He wasn’t in the lead when he finished, but the dropped shots from other leaders allowed him to hold on to the 36-hole lead.

Burns only dropped one shot throughout his round with a bogey on the first hole.

He bounced right back from that bogey with a birdie on the par-four second.

Burns and JJ Spaun are the only players with rounds of 66 or better so far.

Another low round isn’t expected at a course as tough as Oakmont, but if Burns keeps a steady hand over the next two rounds, he’ll have a shot at his first major crown.

Scheffler, Rahm, McIlroy All Far Back of Burns

4 of 4
2025 U.S. OPEN - Round Two

Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy all have a ton of work to do if they want to contend this weekend.

Scheffler and Rahm finished at four-over, while McIlroy barely made the cut at six-over.

Scheffler had an up-and-down round that featured just three pars on the front nine, which was the second nine he played on Friday.

Scheffler was only one-over for the day. He battled over every hole just to remain seven shots back of Burns.

Rahm had a disastrous day on course with a five-over round that featured a double bogey, four bogeys and a single birdie.

McIlroy got spared by a fast dropping cut line that fell all the way to seven-over.

The Masters champion actually shot two strokes better than the first round. The lower score allowed him to avoid the cut line and stick around for the weekend.

None of the three golfers are in great shape going into the weekend. They will need two incredible rounds and a bit of luck to be at the top of the leaderboard come Sunday.
