Weather: Like with the first ODI, a thunderstorm is forecast for late afternoon and could disrupt play. AccuWeather.com suggest the first storm will hit around 2 p.m., but things should clear up soon after. The first match had to be reduced to 40 overs a side because of bad weather, and it could happen again on Sunday.
Overview
Thanks to a record-breaking performance by youngster Kagiso Rabada, South Africa can wrap up the ODI series in Bangladesh pretty quickly. Rabada’s six for 16, including a hat-trick, led South Africa to a comfortable win in the first ODI. Like with the Twenty20 side, any worries about the inexperience of the bowling attack have surely been eased.
For Bangladesh, it’s back to the drawing board. The same concerns that have plagued them time and time again were evident once more in the first ODI against South Africa. Impatient shots and a lack of substantial partnerships all contributed to their undoing. Just four batsmen managed double figures in the first match and just two of those passed 30—nobody passed 50.
South Africa’s conundrum will be somewhat different. This series is very much there for a little bit of experimenting, and they might be tempted to make a few changes to the bowling lineup for the second match.
There are an unprecedented three spinners in the South African squad, and while it was the paceman Rabada who was the chief destroyer in the first game, South Africa’s spinners have been very tidy on this tour. Aaron Phangiso and Eddie Leie are waiting in the wings, and both had tidy returns in the T20 series.
The batting is unlikely to change, but there will be some concern over Quinton de Kock. Since returning from the injury that nearly kept him out of the World Cup, De Kock has not been the same. He is likely to keep wicket in the Test series so South Africa will be hoping he can get his confidence up before the end of the ODI matches.
Key players
Bangladesh
Mustafizur Rahman was Bangladesh's best bowler in the first ODI and managed to keep the screws on South Africa. He has only four ODI caps to his name but has already made an impression in his short time in international cricket. If he can find support from somewhere, Bangladesh might be able to pose a threat to South Africa's indomitable batting lineup.
South Africa
Faf du Plessis finds himself in something of a purple patch. While South Africa's batsmen haven't really struggled on this tour, knowing that there is a player in the order that is not going to let you down is a big boost, especially in the absence of AB de Villiers.
