Patrick Reed pulled off a rare achievement in the first round of the 2025 U.S. Open on Thursday.

On the par-5 fourth hole, Reed recorded an albatross, also known as a double-eagle, which occurs when a player records a score of three strokes under par on a single hole. It's just the fourth albatross in U.S. Open history at Oakmont Country Club since records began being kept in 1983.

The last player to record an albatross at the U.S. Open was Nick Watney in 2012 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. Shaun Micheel pulled off the shot at Pebble Beach in 2010, and Chen Tze-chung was the first to notch a double-eagle in U.S. Open recorded history in 1985 at Oakland Hills Country Club.

Despite Reed's incredible shot on the fourth hole, he also had bogeys and the second and fifth holes. He bounced back with a birdie on the sixth to continue his up-and-down day.

Reed's last PGA Tour victory came in 2021 at the Farmers Insurance Open, which was his ninth career win. His lone major win came at the 2018 Masters Tournament, and his best finish at the U.S. Open is fourth place that same year.

This year's U.S. Open field is full of talented players like Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and 2024 U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, so Reed is undoubtedly facing an uphill battle. However, he started the tournament in grand fashion and could have a great chance to earn his first win in the last four years.
