Ange Postecoglou Fired by Tottenham, Won Club's 1st Major Trophy Since 2008
On the heels of a 2024-25 season that unexpectedly ended in the club's first major trophy since 2008, Tottenham Hotspur is parting ways with manager Ange Postecoglou.
Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph was the first to report the news on Friday.

Postecoglou had been Tottenham's manager since 2023, and he led them to the 2024-25 Europa League title last month. However, Tottenham finished 17th—one place clear of relegation—in the 2024-25 English Premier League table.
"When I reflect on my time as Manager of Tottenham Hotspur my overriding emotion is one of pride," Postecoglou said in a statement.
"The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream."
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Tottenham are expected to hire a new manager next week, and Brentford's Thomas Frank is the leading candidate to replace Postecoglou.
Frank has been the head coach at Brentford since 2018, and he led them to top-10 finishes in the EPL in two of the past three seasons.
From 2009-10 through 2023-24, Tottenham finished eighth or better in the EPL standings each year.
Following an eighth-place result in 2022-23, Tottenham made a coaching change and hired Postecoglou as the replacement for Antonio Conte, who was fired during the 2022-23 campaign.
Under Postecoglou, Tottenham showed improvement in 2023-24, moving up to fifth place, but the bottom fell out this past season.
Although the 1-0 Europa League final win over Manchester United last month gave Tottenham their first major trophy since the 2007-08 English Football League Cup, it wasn't enough to save Postecoglou's job.
Postecoglou, who was born in Greece and raised in Australia, coached numerous Greek and Australian clubs before landing with Tottenham. He was also the Australian national team coach for a spell, and he coached at Celtic from 2021 to 2023.
His extensive experience suggests there could be more opportunities in his future, but Tottenham had little choice other than to make a change after enduring their worst result since the 1976-77 season, which was the last time they got relegated.
