Bangladesh vs. South Africa, 1st ODI: Winners and Losers
South Africa got their three-match ODI series against Bangladesh off to a winning start thanks to a superb ODI debut performance by Kagiso Rabada and some good batting by Faf du Plessis and Rilee Rossouw.
South Africa won by eight wickets with 53 balls still remaining in a rain-reduced affair in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Friday.
We've picked the winners and losers from the match, add your own in the comments.
Winner: Kagiso Rabada
1 of 6
It’s quite something to make your debut as a rookie when you are stepping out of the shadow of guys like Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander.
If your name is Kagiso Rabada, it’s no problem.
The 20-year old produced a stellar performance, claiming six of 16 in his eight overs—including a hat-trick—making his effort the best ever performance on ODI debut.
The youngster was the star of the Under-19 World Cup, which South Africa won last year, and has since been fast-tracked through the system. Rabada’s is almost certainly bowling himself into a Test debut at this rate.
Loser: The Rain
2 of 6
The weather has played along nicely during this series but interrupted the start of play for a lengthy period on Friday.
It meant that Kagiso Rabada was only allowed eight overs, and considering the way he was bowling, who knows what could have happened if he had an extra two overs.
Winner: Shakib Al Hasan
3 of 6
Shakib Al Hasan was the only Bangladesh batsman who showed even an inkling of composure. Al Hasan scored 48 off 51, one of just four batsmen to get into double figures.
Hasan was in good form when Bangladesh recently beat India but didn't quite make an impact in the Twenty20s against South Africa. Still, if he's regained some of his form, that can only be good news for the Tigers.
Loser: Kyle Abbott
4 of 6
After a superb outing in the T20s, Kyle Abbott went completely wayward in the first ODI against Bangladesh.
Even with Kagiso Rabada constantly keeping the pressure on, Abbott failed to find his rhythm. He had the second highest economy rate of both teams and did not get a single wicket.
As they say in South Africa: ag shame.
Winner: Mustafizur Rahman
5 of 6
Despite South Africa having a modest target, the majority of Bangladesh's bowlers were carted all over the park once Faf du Plessis and Rilee Rossouw got going.
Not Mustafizur Rahman, though. His economy rate of 2.50 was the second best in the match (Kagiso Rabada was the best) and the 19-year old is starting to make quite an impression in limited overs cricket after making his debut just a few months ago.
Winner: Rilee Rossouw
6 of 6
Rilee Rossouw has batted almost everywhere in the South African lineup, and he has made it count almost every single time.
He started his international career with consecutive ducks but has gone on to make up for that dubious achievement time and time again. The question for selectors will soon be how they keep on fitting Rossouw in when AB de Villiers returns for the next ODI series.
