Ryan Garcia to Undergo Surgery for Hand Injury, Will Resume Training in 6 Weeks

Ryan Garcia is set to undergo hand surgery, which will put him on the shelf for the next six weeks.

Garcia's manager, Guadalupe Valencia, confirmed a report from SI.com's Chris Mannix that Garcia will have a procedure on his right hand Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Mannix noted that Garcia injured his hand while training for his May 2 fight against Rolando Romero, which Garcia lost by unanimous decision.

It isn't yet clear when or who Garcia will fight next, but he is expected to be able to resume training six weeks after surgery, per Mannix.

The 26-year-old Garcia shocked the boxing world last year when he seemingly handed Devin Haney the first loss of his career.

Garcia was supposed to challenge Haney for the WBC super lightweight title, but failed to make weight. Despite that, the fight went on as scheduled, but it was no longer a championship match.

After largely dominating the bout, Garcia was ruled the winner by majority decision. The result was later overturned and ruled a no-contest after Garcia tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine. He was subsequently banned for one year.

On May 2, Garcia and Haney were both in action in separate fights at Times Square in New York City.

The expectation was that both Garcia and Haney would win in order to set up a rematch. Haney held up his end of the bargain by beating José Ramírez via unanimous decision, however, Garcia was shocked by Romero.

Garcia dropped to 24-2 in his career with the loss, while Haney is still undefeated with a 32-0 mark.

According to Mannix, a Garcia vs. Haney rematch is still possible, but perhaps far less likely than it would have been had both fighters won.

A source informed Mannix that Garcia prefers a rematch against Romero over one against Haney, which makes some sense given that Romero won the vacant WBA (Regular) welterweight title by defeating Garcia.

Garcia's promoter, legendary boxer Oscar De La Hoya, also went on the record as saying there was "zero" interest in a Haney rematch and that a rematch with Romero is "the right move."

Given that information and the fact that Garcia will be out of action for the next six weeks, it may be time for Haney to begin exploring other options for his next fight.
