Indy 500 2025 Results, Top Finishers and Analysis From 109th Edition of Race
After four straight finishes in the top 10, Álex Palou is the Indianapolis 500 winner for the first time.
The three-time IndyCar Series champion held off Marcus Ericsson down the final stretch to earn a trip to the winner's circle and the best glass of milk he'll ever drink.

Running in second, Palou made his move on Ericsson with 14 laps remaining and didn't look back.
It was an impressive performance from Palou, who never strayed too far from the leader and picked the perfect moment to pounce. Ericsson was unable to close the gap, and a caution on the final lap abruptly ended his comeback bid.
Josef Newgarden was seeking a third straight Indy 500 win, but that wasn't the big subplot surrounding the Team Penske star. He and teammate Will Power were moved to the back of the field for illegal modifications to their cars, a scandal that led Team Penske to oust its entire leadership team.
Scott McLaughlin, on the other hand, didn't run afoul of any IndyCar rules, so he got to keep his original starting place (10th). In a bitter piece of irony, he wound up having by far the worst day of the three Penske drivers.
McLaughlin was warming up his tires on the pace laps when he crashed into an inside wall. The damage was too significant for the No. 3 car to continue.
Newgarden, meanwhile, did well to work his way up the field as the race progressed, but his three-peat bid ended with a little over 60 laps remaining. A fuel pressure issue forced him into the garage.
The 2025 Indy 500 isn't a race Team Penske will recall with fondness.
Pole-sitter Robert Shwartzman may have mixed emotions as well.
Starting from the first position in the Indianapolis 500, especially as a rookie, is something to celebrate in its own right. As for the race itself, Shwartzman took himself out of contention when he hit the inside wall on pit road and collided with some of his crew.
It looked like Ryan Hunter-Reay might be heading to a second career Indy 500 victory as he was pacing the field past the halfway point of the race. With 30 laps to go, however, he stalled out in the pits and fell all the way to last place among the drivers still out on the track.
Hunter-Reay's misfortune opened the door wide open for Palou, who had been lurking a few spots back with enough fuel and tires to carry him the rest of the way.
The result will widen Palou's lead in the IndyCar Series championship standings. He was already nearly 100 points ahead of Kyle Kirkwood entering Sunday.
The IndyCar season will pick back up on June 1 with the Detroit Grand Prix, which sends drivers though the streets of the Motor City. This will be the third year on the current track, with Palou and then Scott Dixon prevailing in each of the last two installments.
