Thursday Games

No. 14 Texas A&M def. No. 6 Auburn, 3-2

The SEC tournament officially has its Cinderella.

No. 14 Texas A&M became the worst seed to advance to the quarterfinals with a narrow 3-2 victory over No. 6 Auburn to kickstart Thursday's action. All three of the victors' runs came in the third inning when Kaeden Kent launched a three-run homer to take the lead for good.

Auburn got solo home runs from Eric Snow in the fifth inning and Lucas Steele in the ninth inning, but it wasn't enough to make up that initial deficit.

The Aggies' pitching staff deserves plenty of credit for the win, as they kept the Tigers in check throughout the game.

Starter Justin Lamkin allowed just one run and three hits while striking out five in five innings of work, while relief pitchers Weston Moss, Kaiden Wilson and Clayton Freshcorn allowed just one run over the final four frames.

Next up for Texas A&M is a quarterfinal matchup against LSU.

No. 8 Tennessee 7, No. 1 Texas 5

Fans in Hoover couldn't have asked for a better game than the one the Vols and Longhorns delivered on Thursday evening.

It was all Texas through the early stages as the Longhorns scored four unanswered runs through the first four innings. Kimble Schuessler drove one in on a single, Jalin Flores hit a sac fly and Ethan Mendoza hit a triple that drove in a pair.

But the defending national champions rallied, starting with an RBI single from Cannon Peebles in the fifth to drive in two runs. From there, Hunter Burns walked Dean Curley with the bases loaded to give the Vols another in the sixth. Reese Chapman added one more in the sixth on a sac fly to even things up.

After both teams went scoreless in the final three innings, Tennessee got things started in extra innings with a home run from Gavin Kilen to take a 5-4 lead.

The Longhorns didn't go away in the bottom of the 10th, and the Vols made things more difficult on themselves. Pitcher Brandon Arvidson attempted to pick off Rylan Galvan, but a wild throw allowed him to get all the way to third. Schuessler then drove him in to tie things up.

Texas got another in scoring position, but Tennessee's Nate Snead struck out a pair to end the 10th inning.

Both teams had their opportunities in the 11th but failed to produce a run. The Vols then took a two-run lead thanks to a clutch double from Kilen in the top of the 12th.

Tennessee's Nate Snead then shut the Longhorns down in the bottom of the 12th, and Texas' first SEC tournament run came to an end.

With the win over the top-ranked Longhorns, the Vols did wonders for their chances of hosting a regional in Knoxville. They can make their resume stronger with a win over Vanderbilt on Saturday.

No. 4 Vanderbilt 6, No. 12 Oklahoma 1

Oklahoma had a strong run in its first SEC tournament, but the Sooners didn't have enough to take down a powerhouse in Vanderbilt.

The Commodores jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third thanks to a groundout RBI from Rustan Rigdon, an RBI double from RJ Austin that scored two and an RBI double from Riley Nelson.

The Sooners cut into the lead with a run in the fourth, but that was all they would end up getting. Meanwhile, the Vandy Boys piled on another run in the fourth with an RBI single from Austin, and added one more in the seventh on an RBI double from Braden Holcomb.

Oklahoma had a golden opportunity to cut into the lead in the top of the eighth inning when it loaded the bases with two outs, but Vandy's Sawyer Hawks delivered a clutch strikeout to get out of the inning with no damage done.

With the win, Vanderbilt will now get a matchup with rival Tennessee in the semifinal with a trip to the SEC Championship game on the line.
