Scottie Scheffler Reacts to Being in Golf's GOAT Talk with Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus
Scottie Scheffler is flattered but doesn't want to contemplate the legacy talk that's only increasing after his victory in the PGA Championship on Sunday.
ESPN's Marty Smith told Scheffler that colleague Andy North had put him in the same breath as Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as "the three best ever."
"I try not to think about that stuff," Scheffler said. "… Any time you can get compared to those guys is pretty special. I'm always trying to stay in the present. I don't think about career goals or anything like that. I'm just trying to come out here and compete be and the best that I can be."
The 28-year-old is now a three-time major champion with 15 career wins on the PGA Tour. In terms of accolades, he has a long way to go to catch Nicklaus and Woods.
Scheffler does, however, stand head and shoulders above his peers in the same way Woods did at his peak, though. All of his major triumphs have come by three or more strokes.
One problem with following Woods is that he set such a high bar. Tiger was a force of nature in the early 2000s, so much so that some tournament organizers changed the layout of their courses to offset some of his dominance.
Scheffler's steady consistency doesn't capture the imagination in the same way, but Luke Donald sees some parallels between him and Woods.
"He just sort of played his game, didn't make too many mistakes and wore you down, and I certainly experienced that in 2006," Donald said of Tiger's PGA Championship win nearly two decades ago, per ESPN's Pablo Uggetti. "I think Scottie is a similar kind of player when he gets the lead."
As the adage goes, genius is never appreciated in its time. With Scheffler, a lot of fans at least seem to understand he can put together a career that will have him in rarefied air when all is said and done.
