Scottie Scheffler Had to Switch Drivers Before PGA Championship Amid McIlroy Ruling
After winning the 2025 PGA Championship, Scottie Scheffler revealed that he had to make an adjustment earlier in the tournament.
Scheffler told reporters that he had to switch drivers before the PGA Championship, just like Rory McIlroy had to do after the PGA Tour ruled that his regular driver was "nonconforming."
It now appears that Scheffler was among the 50 players who had their drivers tested for compliance before the PGA Championship.
"Finding driver heads that have crept over the line of conformance is not an unusual occurrence, especially for clubs that are hit thousands of times over a long period of time," Kerry Haigh, chief championships officer for the PGA of America, said in a statement shared by Golf Digest's Ryan Herrington.
Scheffler said Sunday that he had no issue with the procedure, and he hopes it becomes a common protocol going forward.
"If we're going to do it right, we need to be more robust. Even test guys every week," Scheffler told reporters.
The switch in drivers didn't affect Scheffler's game, as he earned a five-stroke victory with an overall score of -11 for his first career PGA Championship win and his third career major title. McIlroy posted a score of +3, tying for 47th. The reigning Masters champion declined to speak to the media after each round of the tournament.
It appears that the PGA plans to be more stringent with its testing going forward, so golfers will have to be prepared to adjust on the fly like Scheffler did on his way to his PGA Championship victory.
