Texas A&M Tops College Softball
4 of 4
For the first time in school history, the Texas A&M Aggies are the No 1 seed in the NCAA Softball Championships. The best team in the sport this year enters the tournament attempting to win its third national championship and first since 1987.
A combination of power from Mya Perez (14 home runs, 68 RBIs) and KK Dement (13 home runs, 58 RBIs), and speed from Kennedy Powell (19 stolen bases) and Koko Wooley (15 SBs), has helped the team achieve one of its best seasons ever. They have the offensive tools necessary to emerge from the tournament with that elusive title, but it does not stop there.
Senior pitcher Emily Kennedy went 21-4 this season, with an ERA of 2.68. She was incredibly reliable for the Aggies, pitching in 148.2 innings and allowing just 44 earned runs. Opposing batters struggled, hitting for an average of just 1.91.
Sydney Lessentine, a freshman, tallied a 4-2 record and also shut down opposing batters, limiting them to a 1.90 average.
If the Aggies can remain consistent with their performance this season, they will be an incredibly difficult "out" for any opponent, beginning with Saint Francis at Davis Diamond.
Their toughest opposition will come in the form of Oklahoma, winner of the last four tournaments. The Sooners earned co-champion status of the SEC Softball Tournament with the Aggies after the title game was called off due to inclement weather.
Oklahoma enters the tournament with six batters hitting double-digit home runs, led by Gabbie Garcia with 16. A potent, hard-hitting offense and solid pitching staff, led by senior Sam Landry, has the Sooners looking for title No. 5.
