Olympic Rugby Medalist Josaia Raisuqe Dies at Age 30 After Road Accident
Josaia Raisuqe, a rugby silver medalist with Fiji at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, died at the age of 30 after being involved in a road accident.
Per Sam Joseph of The Athletic, Raisuqe's French club, Castres Olympique, announced his death on Thursday.
"Castres Olympique is in mourning," the club said in a statement. "It is with a heavy heart that we learned of the death this morning in a road accident of our player Josaia Raisuqe. The entire CO family is devastated by this terrible news. He was a wonderful teammate who was much appreciated by everyone."
Raisuqe had played winger for Castres since 2021. Castres postponed its match against Clermont Auvergne that was scheduled for Saturday.
"We are in a state of shock following Josaia’s sudden death," club president Pierre-Yves Revol said. "He was a radiant young man, both on and off the pitch, and a pillar of the Fijian community that we have at the Club and to which we are very attached."
Raisuqe helped lead Fiji to a first-place finish in Group C at the Paris Olympics. The team defeated Ireland in the quarterfinals and Australia in the semifinals before losing to France in the gold-medal match.
