Churchill Downs may not have been ideal Saturday afternoon after nearby rain left the track muddied, but it still produced a memorable finish that saw Sovereignty named the winner of the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby.
With 7-1 odds, the three-year-old colt emerged from the pack late and raced side-by-side with favorite Journalism. Nose to nose down the front stretch, he did not allow the pressure of the moment, the rain-soaked track, or the raucous crowd get to him.

He bested the horse who, from all accounts, was the most ready to win the derby and contend for a Triple Crown.
That is not to say that Journalism did not run a great race. Like the winner, he found himself in the pack early but fought through the traffic to emerge as one of the two horses competing for the win.
It was a race in which every single competing horse was a descendant of, arguably, the greatest competitor in the history of the sport, Secretariat.
Equally as impressive as what the winner and runner-up accomplished was what third-place finisher Baeza did.
The 21st horse available for the race officially entered the field when Rodriguez scratched and the John Shirreffs-trained colt was instantly one of the best horses in the lineup.
A fast horse whose speed only increased with every race, he showed out on the biggest stage in the sport and should be a real contender to win his next race, whether it comes in Baltimore at the Preakness or in New York at Belmont Stakes.
Trainer Bob Baffert had the chance to make history Saturday with his seventh victory at the race but his horse, Citizen Bull, finished a disappointing 15th.
