The USGA announced play was suspended at 8 p.m. with details as to when the round will finish still to come.
Marina Alex and Karrie Webb paced the early group of golfers, leading with scores of four-under par. Starting on the back nine, Alex's only bogey of the day came on No. 18. She used a charge on her last six holes of the day, birdieing three of them, to get to four under.
Webb used four birdies on the front nine to coast the back nine, parring each hole on her way to an early share of the lead. Fox Sports and Webb discussed her first day of the tournament:
Last year's champion did not fare so well Thursday. Wie shot a two-over par with four bogeys on the day. After she went even on the front nine, her final two bogeys on Nos. 11 and 18 dropped her to two over.
Ranked second in the world, Lydia Ko was looking like she was going to have a big day in the first round with three birdies on her first seven holes. But after losing a stroke on No. 8, she bogeyed three of her final eight holes to end her day at even.
It was an amateur, though, who looked like she would be stealing the headlines on Day 1. After her first seven holes, Regina Plasencia had a share of the lead at four under par. But she came crashing back down with a double bogey on eight and two straight bogeys on nine and 10.
Plasencia managed to get through 12 holes before officials suspended play, and she is tied for 18th with an even score for the day.
Dylan Kim provided one of the shots of the day on hole No. 1, as the U.S. Open shows. She is tied for 62nd place at two over par through her first 11 holes.
World No. 1 Park was only able to make it through 14 holes before officials suspended play. She is tied for sixth at two under par. Going one over on her first six holes, Park birdied four of her next seven to lower her mark. The U.S. Open showed how she made her move on the leaderboard:
Alex is ranked 138th in the world and has only finished in the top 10 in two events. She'll have to try to keep up with Webb, who has 41 career victories and is ranked 18th in the world, along with survive an all but guaranteed charge from Park.
